Sweet post history, I got dibbs on whatever your bout to sell

Re: ar 15 1-4

I'm not a fan of the reticle on the Nikon 1-4. I tried it for multigun and ended up putting it on a .22. Presently using a Burris MTAC and Weaver 1-5x on another gun. I also have a couple of 1-3x Weavers, which are probably the best bang for the buck. The Vortex 1-4x is nice as well, but getting up there from your target price.

Re: ar 15 1-4

Looking for one myself. It will be anything but a Nikon. I have had bad dealings with them in the past. Customer service blows. I am leaning toward the Vortex.

Re: ar 15 1-4

I was actually debating this one myself a few days ago after I got a chance to look down a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4. The price tag was around 525, but the glass looked very clear, images were crisp (then again, aren't they all in the stores where the weather is perfect!). Anyhow, I think I would still favor the PST or SWFA SSHD over the Leupy.

You can also find this as a package with a fast fire and pepr mount included very reasonably priced.

I recently had the oportunity to see the mtac version and was quite a bit more satisfied than the standard tac (in both design and glass). Just my personal feeling...

Any idea what type of reticle you are leaning toward?

Re: ar 15 1-4

BobD i would really like a mill dot reticle i have looked at the tac30 and the only thing that i dont like is the reticle

Re: ar 15 1-4

Unfortunately, I think you are set for spending a bit more than originally intended. For whatever reason, most low power variables in that price bracket from what I've seen do not offer mil dot reticles. You see several types of duplex's, dot/or circle crosshair combinations and quite a few favors of bdc reticles... There may be some, but your options will be limited.

It would be nice to see Burris offer different reticle options in the 1-4's as they have the updated mil reticle in the other mtac models.

If I were in your shoes, I would save up another few hundred and keep your options open. You are just a bit below a really good group of offerings that you will be happy with far longer than settling for something that doesn't have everything you want.

Good luck

Re: ar 15 1-4

Just sold my Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4, not because it was bad, but because I wanted more magnification. While I had I was able to compare it to my friends Vortex PST 1-4 and the Vortex has slightly better glass, a true 1x power (leupold's is actually 1.5 if you look on their website), and you can use the reticle to match any grain bullet with their software on the Vortex website. If I get another 1-4x it will be the Vortex Viper PST.

Re: ar 15 1-4

Just curious, have you ever looked thru a low powered mil dot reticle? There's a reason there aren't tons of them out there. Its very small at those powers making it a bit more difficult to use, and most though certainly not all users of low power optics rarely shoot at dstances or targets where ranging and absolute precision is neccesary. If you need precision more than speed you may want to consider more power. Be sure to post your thoughts on whatever you end up with.

Re: ar 15 1-4

Beef I would like to have more power but I don't want more power then the rifle needs its only a 16" but want to use it for hunting coyotes

Re: ar 15 1-4

First off there is 3 rules to remember when buying a scope.
Rule #1, Im number one
Rule #2, the scope is number 2

Re: ar 15 1-4

This. For the money...hard to beat.

Great advice here . . .

I've owned the mil and MOA versions of the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 and more power helps in using a mil-dot style reticle effectively. It can be done, but isn't ideal. Would you consider stepping up beyond a 1x on the low end?

These seem to be very good for the money based on all accounts. I have not owned one myself, however.

If you're still set on 1-4, $300 price range, and mildot-style reticle, the Leatherwood HiLux mentioned seems to be the closest to what you want and gets pretty good reviews. If you do a google search, should be able to find some of the reviews.
