Gunsmithing AR-15 throwing flyers?

Re: AR-15 throwing flyers?

One question, are these flyer's going on call? On call, it's shooter error, not on call, barrel nut/receiver/carrier key relationship issue. Did you use a drill rod to index the barrel nut to receiver for a proper gas tube to carrier key relationship. I think that's the source of your problem. Place a drill rod in the carrier key and it should exit the receiver and pass through the barrel nut sprocket smoothly, without touching anything. Right now, your gas tube is kinking. The condition brings about all sorts problems from accuracy and wear to cycling. BTW, don't worry about torque on the barrel nut being exact to a particular number. The important thing is that no part of the sprocket touches the drill rod. You may need to put more torque on the barrel nut to get clearance.

Is your post intended as an academic exercise or are you really trying to figure out what is happening? If it shoots 'bugholes' like you say it does then the rifle does not need additional work done to it. The fact that the flyer is consistently happening on the last round might be significant. Are you holding the trigger back until all recoil is complete?

The situation he described could result in issues with any one or all three of them.

Also, I think it is rather foolish to ignore Graham's post. If there is nothing wrong with the rifle, and you just need more experience shooting a gasser, then the exercise is academic and won't solve anything.

Re: AR-15 throwing flyers?

It's the shooter, not the rifle. Listen to Sterling and Graham here.

Careful refinement of trigger technique, recording both calls and impacts in a data book, and consistent proper mental approach to each individual shot will fix your flyers.
