Ok so I am waiting for AR15 to let me login and I know guys here have vast rifle knowledge so.....

I have a friend who is offering me an AR receiver at a good price. It is marked Multi for a caliber. What calibers can I build on this platform? I own a 5.56 that came as a unit and thought it might be fun to build something but I am just not sure what caliber rifle I can create with the receiver besides a 223/5.56 and a 22lr. Any info or links would be great. Thanks

Re: AR Reciever Question

As Red aptly pointed out...the possibilities are nearly limitless. The list goes on and on. 6.5 Grendel is arguably one of the best, more recent additions to the list for long-range performance on paper and game.

Anyway, more importantly...what kind of lower is it? Is it stripped or complete (if complete...what components does it have on it)? Finally, what "good price" is he offering it to you for?

C'mon... Let's give the guy a break. I think you can figure out by the original Post that he means "lower".

And... don't think any less of me but I post on AR15.com too. For 2 reasons. First: because I believe in sharing knowledge. The HIDE has FAR more knowledgeable members and FAR fewer Mall Ninjas and much of what you guys have to say applies to arfcom to... but there are also people on arfcom that know their shit when it comes to Gas-Guns. And second: Because I'm pretty close friends with the owner of Spikes Tactical.

I fuckin' love SH.

Side note. I started to look at ARs. Went to AR15.com, couldn't believe the amount of crap threads. Although I have to hand it to some of the guys there, they sure can put a tacticool AR together.

To the rest: Please read my original post. I DO know there's infinitely more knowledge to be gained here... I'm just not that Narrow-minded.

It is a completely stripped Lower believe it is Aero brand and it looks like about $70 for the reciever. I apologize for not saying lower previously. I did check out Ar15 and in my opinion it is full of a lot of junk you have to sift through to get what you need. So I thought I would ask here. Mainly what I was looking for is can I build a .308 since I have another .308 already. I wasn’t sure if the mag well would allow it etc… Plenty of people here have precision long range AR style rifles so why not pose the question her. Thanks for the great info! So will a .308 work? If not I would just built it to be a 5.56 and yes I am aware they are different as I have owned a few AR just never built one

As for AR15 overflow that I am not. I came here because last week I finally got my new Savage 10FP and I want to be able to use it effectively and this site has GREAT info and people.

Re: AR Reciever Question

The .308 is too long to use in an AR-15. If you want to shoot .308 in an AR platform you'll have to move to the AR-10 platform (or the other AR-10 styled rifles that aren't called AR-10s.)

Re: AR Reciever Question

You are limited by the size of the case head and the length of the cartridge. It if fits within the magazine constraints of the AR-15 platform, (2.260") then you can probably feed it from a mag. If you can keep the case head within reason, there is probably a bolt for it. 5.56mm bolts, 6.8spc bolts, 7.62x39 bolts, and some of these WSSM bolts are avaliable for purchase..so if your cartridge matches one of those boltfaces and fits inside the 2.260" magwell dimensions you are good to go. Of course there are exceptions to that rule, like single shot uppers or perhaps if its been done yet uppers that are belt-fed or have side fed mags..
