What is everyone's purpose and use for their ar10s? I hunt and shoot long range, mainly shoot long range, and I'm considering dropping my bolt gun and going to the ar10 platform in a lightweight 6.5 creedmoor. What are yalls opinion of the purpose and use in long range shooting? Capable enough?

Well, you're asking for opinion so take it as one only. My view of the purpose of a semi-auto is fast follow up shots with substantial magazine capacity. If that works for your "purpose" then next you'll need an AR that can shoot in the neighborhood of 1/2 MOA. I say 1/2 MOA because without atmospherics it will allow you to hit a 20 in. target at 1000 yds. While possible, it's certainly not a factory rifle and in addition you'll have to be able to drive it to the 1/2 MOA it's capable of. Finally, I don't shoot 6.5 Creed but I do shoot .260 Rem which is essentially the same thing and it's pretty much done at 1200 yds. so you'll have to define "long range."

1/2 MOA at 1000 yards would be 5". 2 MOA at 1000 yards is 20". I love hunting with mine, you will never get one as light as a bolt gun. But its a trade off for magazine capacity and quick follow up. Depends on the type of hunting you are doing. I use mine when I am sitting in the woods or small food plot, basically anywhere under 150 yards. If I am hunting in a spot that I may have a longer shot I will take a bolt gun, they are just easier to shoot more accurately. That's just my opinion.

I said "hit" a 20" target at 1000 yds. No one I've ever seen hits a 5" target at 1000 yds., not repeatedly anyway. A handful of shooters on the planet can manage a 10" target at 1000 yds. A good shooter can do 20" with an accurate rifle, throw in a little wind.................well not so much. As always YMMV.

I agree with your statement, but that is putting the shooter, conditions and the rifle all together. Most comps have bigger than 1MOA targets and few people shoot them clean, but everyone talks about their sub moa rifles.... That said, taking inaccuracy out of the rifle lets you see the shooter/conditions more and increases the chances of hits. Reading wind is still the biggest variation in POI, if I remember the MonteCarlo sim data.

I struggle with this same question. What exactly is the best use of my LMT-MWS with a 20SS barrel. I’m spinning it up right now to try to see what it will actually do in PRS type matches. And then what caliber? I have 308 barrels now, but what would be ‘better’?

I built a general purpose 308 with a Mega receiver set, NF 2.5-10, Fortis switch rail, Criterion 18" barrel and a Giesselle 2 stage trigger. The rifle shoots excellent, I hunt with it, and target shoot with it. I have it doped out to 600 right now with no issues. Its a little heavy after I put the Bipod and suppressor on it, but its a great all purpose rifle
