Im not interested in building an AR. I have built bolt action rigs before, for long distance shooting but now I want to try the AR platform for distances out to 500 yards.
Im going to stick to .223 as the rounds are relatively cheap to reload and the accuracy with my old .222 rifle over 300 yards was good.
My questions are ;
What is a good barrel length and rate of twist for the .223 for shooting out to 500 yards with reasonable accuracy ?
I am looking at the PWS Marksman 3 Gun variants 114, 116 and 118 as examples of what seems to me to be quality rifles. ( Im not too worried about the cost right now ) these all seem to have a 1:8 twist . should I go with the 18" barrel to give me more muzzle velocity and accuracy ?
I will occasionally use it for hunting small game in the bush.
