Are FF barrel nuts universal?

If you already have a FF system in place, how difficult is it to switch to another handguard? Do you need a new barrel nut? Not sure if they are proprietary to each manufacturer.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

No, not all FF handguards will use the same barrel nut. The threads will be the same. Every manufacturer's FF handguard mounting method is different. Most FF handguards should come with a new nut though. Just be sure to ask what other tools/parts are required to install it. ie; Daniel Defense FF handguards have a special wrench that is sold separately that makes installation easier. Some have said that a AR15 multitool will do the job.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

What dlx said is accurate.

Not all systems have the same mounting hardware. It really comes down to: a) what you have now; and b) what you want to switch to. You may luck out and be able to just swap the handguard in a matter of minutes.

Worst case scenario, you'll need a specialty barrel nut wrench (like the ones from DD, PRI, etc.) to remove or to install a new handguard system.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

What about within the same manufacturer? For example, I have a VTAC battlerail right now and was thinking about switching to a Troy quad. Very different designs but (pretty much) the same manufacturer.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

I'm not familiar with the Troy/Viking (via Troy) rail systems. You might try dropping them an e-mail or giving their CS dep't a ring to see if they can assist you or point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Just looking at the pictures it looks like it uses the same clamp on solution as the VTAC battlerail and troy battlerail

Well I'm not adding any new equipment at the moment, but I currently have the VTAC TRX battlerail with the modular picatinny sections but would like to switch to a standard quad rail. Even if Troy and Viking Tac are compatible that would give me a lot of options.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

which model Troy rail are you getting specifically? Are you getting a brand new kit? used? If you're getting a new one, it should come with all the hardware to install it.

Also what's it going on? AR15 I assume?

AR is correct. I'm gonna buy a new unit but I would prefer not to do any smith work. My last armorers wrench broke and even though it's pretty simple. BCM did such a good job putting it together that I would hate to dig into it and I really don't want to buy another wrench to do it.

Re: Are FF barrel nuts universal?

If you're getting that Troy rail I linked earlier, it would seem as though the barrel nut is the same. It looks as if the quad rail shares the 2 screw clamp system the vtac extreme and the troy battlerail uses
Look at the last picture on the link I posted. Same two screws. There is a picture of the barrel nut as well and it looks the same too

You could call Rainier, Troy, or BCM to get a definitive answer

And dlxcupid, it sounds as if he's trying to get a rail system as such that he doesn't need to have someone put it on. If they use the same barrel nut, the Troy rail and the VTAC are just held on by 2 small hex bolts

Exactly. I'd like something that just bolts up with the same 2 hex bolts so it's an easy swap. I've done smith work on my ARs before but it's just much easier to leave it alone or leave it to a professional.
