ARE PROOF RIFLES WORTH THE MONEY ?

You mean like claiming AI barrels cost more?

PVA: same price
Bugholes: same price

Ask most smiths: how much to chamber a pre-fit barrel. 737R vs AI vs <insert custom action here>

SAME FUCKING PRICE

You come in, shit all over this thread, start an AI vs Custom action disckslap sidetrack, claim proof barrels are shit, spread misinformation about prefits, never with backup and derail the whole thread.

GTFO and shoot and stop shitting all over the threads outside the bear pit.

@Paton No proof rifles are not worth that cost. You can start with a Barreled Action Bighorn (or ARC)+ Chassis at aroun 2-2.5k and go All the way to an AT-X / Full Custom Action Build at 5k. Only an asshole would consider any of those options "subpar" Even a Tikka is a great starter rifle to build and mod. Tell anyone who says otherwise to fuck off and show you their evidence.

Spend your money on training, ammo and getting in the field.

I agree 100% with the absolute disrespect shown to anyone with a different opinion. It gets old and it's not needed. Make your point with facts and experience.

Proof rifles are priced higher then you could put one together for sure. Same with Gunwerks and other niche builders. It's a business plan and must be working. I have a hunting partner that is leaning towards buying a proof right now. I told him he can do better going custom. But he says he doesn't have time to go thru the process and do any tinkering that might be needed.

Good for him it's not my money and I can see his point.

I have a Tikka with a Proof carbon barrel that Dave Tooley did for me. It hammers. It has a carbon fiber Mcmillian A3 and it’s super lightweight.

Whats weird to me about them is the price jump between the models. The Tundra the OP mentioned is like all the other models but has an adjustable cheek and a defiance deviant, instead of fixed cheek and a Origin. Should be $1000 more, not $4500 more.

Pass on to your buddy. These are completely reasonable. Seems like all Proof is making is the margin on parts cost, without inflating the shit out of the finished product.

No affiliation, but I do buy from them, and the website has real time stock.

I think so! The barrel is more accurate than me most days. Defiance anti and a proof prefit

That MTR price is VERY reasonable for what you're getting. And no wait time from a gunsmith. Custom quality, right off the shelf.

Makes me think of a handful of customs I had built in my early days with trued r700’s and steel barrels,
that were priced at or above that. We’re pretty spoiled these days.

Off the shelf CA Ridgeline .280 AI with handloads and minimal load development. Just beyond barrel break-in. Consistently 1/2 MOA or less.

I have a safe full of custom 700 builds that I had nowhere near that in. I was spoiled that my smith was local, and loved guns, so he charged VERY reasonable prices for work. That's one reason why I have so many. I would buy an old 80's or 90's used 700 ADL for $250-300, and buy a good Bartlein or Kreiger blank from the smith (that he had on-hand), source a cheap used take-off stock on the interwebz, and buy a Remington OEM BDL conversion from Brownells for about $175, and I was in business for around $1,000-1,250 out the door (not including optics). Those good old days are gone now... A damn 700 SPS is $800 now... WTF??? Unless it comes from the factory with a blueprinted and squared action, straight base holes, a factory button-rifled or CHF 5R barrel, and a modern twist rate, ain't no way an SPS is worth $800+.

FWIW:

Over the last week, I've quoted around 10 of our CR Mod-O rifles. With every "widget" included, we are still around $300 cheaper than what Proof retails that rifle for.

Happy to help.

Are you referring to the Tundra retail or the Elevation retail?

FWIW I have 3 of your rifles and zero Proof rifles. Although 2 of your rifles have proof barrels.

I'd bet a lot of money I'll have a 4th LRI rifle before I have a proof rifle.

Any idea whose barrels they use?
Christensen Arms builds their own barrels in-house. They have for well over 20 years. They got well-known around the millennium when both Remington and Browning offered a rare model rifle with a Christensen Arms carbon fiber barrel on their actions. At the time, nobody had carbon fiber barrels on their guns...It was unheard of. They were SUPER light and accurate. We sold quite a few at the gun store. I always wanted one, but never could get my hands on one, without it having been already bought by some rich doctor or lawyer that collected them.

Browning called it the A-Bolt II Carbon Stainless Stalker...

And Remington called their's the M700 VS Composite...

Here's an excerpt from an ad from 2000 for the Browning model.

Thank you for that insight, I bought a barreled action(6.5PRC) on a whim knowing a bud of mine would want it. We put it in a MDT chassis and bought some Norma factory ammo cheap for basically the brass. It shoots minute of deer with the Norma ammo. As he had a bunch of 140 gr Sierra Match kings that's what he loaded up with H4831SC. 51.5-52 grs are shooting well under 1/2 minute while still basically breaking in the barrel. It's shooting very well and better than I really thought it would. Pleasantly surprised.
