I currently have a Remington 700 chambered in .223, that I built from the ground up. I picked up a McMillan A2 stock, and inletted it for a Atlas Worx Detachable Bottom Metal. This is my practice rifle, so I have pieced it together over the past few years. It had a standard Remy bottom metal but just got the Atlas DBM.

The Detachable Bottom Metal Fits Flush with the bottom of the A2 stock, and is inletted correctly. When inserting a AI 10 Round Polymer .223 Mag the mag latches in, but the top of the mag is about 1/8 of an inch shy of the bolt.

I can push the mag up the 1/8 of an inch and rounds chamber smoothly, but the mag slips back down the 1/8 of an inch when a round is ejected, gun is wiggled etc.

The latch on the mag is either 1/8 inch too high (or short however you look at it), or the magazine latch on the Atlas Worx detachable bottom metal is an 1/8 inch too low. There is a 1/8 gap somewhere that needs to be filled.

The Mags are Polymer AI Mags. I don't think I can get a longer magazine latch, so would there be a way to modify a AI mag for proper fit?

Here is a picture of the Mag. Basically I need about 1/8 extension lower on the rear of the Mag. Any suggestions??

Re: Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems

If you got one of the early bottom metals to latch was to short. You have two options. Inlet deeper or get a hold of colin and he will send you a longer latch.

I had a similar problem with my .308 R700/Atlasworx. I emailed Atlasworx and they sent me the longer latch for about $15.00 (shipped from Australia) and it works fine now.

I had a similar problem, same mags, different bottom metal.

I flat-filed that lip on the backside of the mags up about an 1/8." Never had an issue thereafter.

Re: Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems

My issue was that I couldn't get the mag high enough for the round to positively be catched by the bolt. I had to inlet the bottom metal as high up into the HS stock as possible and it still wasn't enough. At the end, the bottom metal was touching the bottom of the receiver. I am nit sure if that is correct? I ended up taking off some of the metal on the spine of the AI mag to make it work.

I am not sure what other option I have. The bottom side of my HS stock looks like crap with e DBM inletted that much.

Re: Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems

Thanks for the info guys. I will probably order another latch and see if that works.

If not I will probably epoxy a metal clip in the 1/8 inch gap. Should actually not wear as much as Polymer.

Re: Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems

The problem with the Atlasworx system is the recess for the release lever is not cut high enough, and the release lever is too short.

Once you get the new lever, find someone to mill the notch about .09 higher, re-install the lever. You may have to trim the lever a little to make it fit properly.
