Should the exsisting front stud hole be used as one of the two holes, or should I drill two new holes? Also how far forward is the ideal position for the rail?

I would use the current swivel stud as one of the mounting points. No need to reinvent the wheel or otherwise go drilling additional holes in your stock (unless it just won't work with your particular setup, stock, etc.).
