While maybe.... a red dot sight might be beneficial in a close quarters real-life situation, I would MUCH rather use a pistol at 50 ft than a 17 lb bolt action rifle. The real benefit of a red dot on a scope is (during a competition/or hunting?) being able to get on target quickly with high power scopes and insuring you are engaging the correct target when there are multiple targets in an array. You can mount a red dot on a Spuhr mount or Dillon sells an inexpensive 45 degree mount for 3 gun. Even more beneficial, I have a prototype from Matt Burkett at Predator Tactical which allows you to mount the red dot along the diameter of the scope and position it so you can superimpose the dot in your left eye while looking through the scope with your right eye. As of now, I don't believe Matt has put this mount into production and it is not available yet. Charlie with Score High in Albuquerque is making a similar mount with double pic rails and selling them for around $40, I just purchased one for the wife's rifle.
