Is it frowned apon to strap ones rifle to the side of his pack?
I know it wouldn't be advetagious to quick deployment, but is there anything wrong with strapping your precision peice on the side?

All I can think of is that it would be tough to ballance out a 15-17 lb. rifle on one side of your pack.

Also, how snazzy do you get with first aid kits in your pack?
I need one, and would like to pick something up at wallyworld.
I am CLS certified, so it wouldnt be shit I would have no idea how to use, but I dont see myself treating a sucking chest wound on a scenic hike.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

i use bungey cord so as i can just pull the rifle around and use it.after i have fired the round or rounds i simple let go of the rifle and it kinda of springs back into its place on the pack.thats what i do

Are you fucking kidding me. What kind of bungy can hold a precision rifle and then you be able to pull it around, shoot and then let go of the rifle and it return to your pack.

eat my ass im ,just playin you jackass.dont make me call you at work agian you doornob.relax levi im just jokin around chill.oh and i dont own any precision rifles all mine are shootin irons!!!!!hahahahahahaha

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

WTF, over?... Not sure what is going on there, but, I had this same question and came to basically the same conclusion. That would be one lop-sided pack. I had been considering something like a shotgun scabbard for the side of my pack, but I ventured away from it. I was concerned about knocking around my rifle and screwing up the zero or breaking the glass all together.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

now that levi and i have broken up to be a bit more serious!i also had the same issue so i esed a rifle scabard from eberlestock, cut some slits in my badlands for it to set down in through the pack and attached it with a stap.cheaper than a new pack.hope this help.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

Do it for hunting when I've got a long walk and not worried about using it fast. I simply use the compression strap on the pack and the Kifaru buttstock holster. The rifle only weighs 9 lbs and the chamber is always empty (duh).

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

if you use the scabard from eberlestock it can be pulled out very easy no need to take the pack off at all.hell with a little practice you can stick it right back in there unloaded of course.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

I'm not entirely sure what is going on here, but I have an answer for you Waldo. When I was in, I had Benton @ TAG (I noticed you were at Lejeune) sew an Eagle scope cover to the side of my pack. The muzzle cover basically supported the weight while the scope cover held it to the pack. This was done just before the Eberlestock packs came out, or at least before I knew about them.

While I can't say that this was an ideal set up, really, what is? I'd say it's better than throwing it across the top. I tried to put my water or other heavy shit on the opposite side to help balance it out, it didn't work too bad. You need to be sure that you can take a knee without banging the muzzle real hard on the ground, hopefully you're not 5 feet tall.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

would like to say sorry for the monkey biz on your post between i and lwilliams seems he and i have a boxing match to attend.i did not notice youre adress.if it helps the eberlestock scabard ihas molle webbing on both sides.thanks for your service and best of luck finding the correct setup for your needs.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

I really really would not like to change my pack...again...lol

The Gunslinger looks nice, but seems it would be a PITA to retrieve the rifle from a pack...more-so than if it was strapped to the side of my pack...

Right now Im using a CorpsMan Assault Pack..and would really like to stick with this, as its working well. It also has Molle on both sides, along with straps, so I can probably work something out with rifle on one side, Camel-Back on the other.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

Balancing weight on the pack is a major issue. 15lbs favoring to one side of the pack will eat you alive over distance. +1 on the gunslinger. I have only used one a few times but they follow the golden rule-keep the weight center and high rather than wide and low. Employment isn't really an issue. I found it rather smooth to grab the exposed rifle with one hand and with the bolt to the sky, slide it over the shoulder into a tuck position where you can easily control the weight. Also have to look at how exposed the rifle will be on the side of the pack during movement over dense or rugged terrain. I would hate for the glass to slam a rock if you slipped of snag every pine branch. With the gunslinger it is easier to know your dimensions and protect the rifle. The buttstock will only be a few inches overhead but it is easier to naturally account for this than width on the back. Modifying a pack is fine but why not just spend a little more for a great product designed for intended use? Plus you will have another pack to add to the collection. Good luck.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

I won this pack a few years ago and still going strong, I really like it, throw the rifle in the sleeve and ammo, sand sock, spotter, and whatever else im takin shootin and toss it in the truck. Oh its made by bulldog Tactical, the problem is you have to be LE or MIL to order from them now, great piece of kit though

oh and mine is not GayCU, its just khaki

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

i have an eberlestock gunslinger 2. it is almost a seamless movement to pull the rifle from the backpack and shoulder it. i use mine when i go squirrel hunting because i usually see some hogs while im out. its not hard to do at all and with practice you can also put it back. unloaded of course.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

youre going the wrong direction...strap any luggage you may need to your rifle and use a triathlon sling to create a backpack backpack rifle. the rifle is the ruckframe. all the cool kids are doing it. look at pic in my woodland camo post, page 2 of my posts.

Re: Attaching rifle to pack.

I use a couple Eberlestocks a G4 and a G2 both are awesome packs. I am not crawling through the desrt in a two way range, but I can say they are very well built and well thought out.

Now on the other side of things, the first aid pack, I would consider myself an expert on. I use one of these (well, I have one in every bag luckily haven't had to USE it yet except for scrapes and minor cuts. Tactical Field/Trauma kit with Quickclot
http://www.deltaoutdoorsman.com/scart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=122
and I have a vacuum packed Israeli Battle Dressing (IBD) 6" along with each kit.

with the quick clot and IBD you have a good first response to a likely injury at the range. As for a sucking chest wound, any platic bag (potato chip etc) taped on THREE sides over the hole is the best you can do until you get a chest tube in. The kit has tape, you supply the plastic bag in that scenario

You don't have to change your pack. Eberlestock sells several gun scabbards that you can attach externally to most packs.
