I've been getting some slight crunchiness on bolt lift on my AWSM in 338MLM recently. I have ignored it a while because I knew the cause, but today I decided to change that.

First, here is a photo of the suspect.

I used a simple felt polishing cylinder and gave it a nice, even polish. The pointed polishing bit might work a bit better, but if you are careful and apply even pressure on the entire ramp you will be ok. I used a bit of clay-based polishing compound. The idea here is to simply smooth the metal that is there, not so much remove any material.

    Finally, the outcome.

It really feels like it should now. I'm really not sure how those two small indentations got in that location, but it's fixed now. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

The cocking piece looks good. No rough spots and all smooth, so the bolt ramp should only get smoother with use, technically.

How they got there I am not sure. I've had to really get on the bolt with some hotter loads over time, so perhaps that caused it (never hammered though, literally). I don't think it will be an issue again for years to come.
