just thought I'd throw these pics out there of the gun I won at a little ole match last year, won aggregate pistol champion. It's a Caspian race ready recon and all internals were donated by billions of sponsors. The gun was built by Brad Thorolson. Got offered 200 bucks for it, should I do it?

ha ha, thanks but it's not for sale, It'll be handed down to my son some day. Curious though, is there a big market for these prize guns to collectors? I got this one appraised for insurance reasons and lets say it appraised for more than buying 4 1911's

Re: Award gun-Caspian 1911

National Matches, Interservice, All-Army, All-Navy, Secretary of the Army, and Secretary of the Navy trophy weapons are worth many times more than the value of their parts.

Anything hand-built by AMU, Weapons Training Battalion, or Crane armorers is going to be right, period. Value as the Champion's Prize adds cachet.

This particular gun made by Brad Throlsen (Chief of the Pistol Section) and the AMU machinists makes this a true crown jewel.

You earned it -- shoot the snot out of it and pass it to your kids. Value isn't going to go down. The weapon will shoot and function right -- prepping you for the NEXT win.

The secret to getting Soldiers to the All-Army and All-Guard is to disguise training as competition. Appeal to something we can't buy -- pride, and recognition of tactical and technical competency. Present a tangible trophy with recognizable value.

Congratulations and great job!

Nice 1911, just one question, Whats with the rear sight? Were they trying to make the shortest sight radius possible??? Why wouldn't they put the rear sight as far back as possible?

good question, what I know is that all the parts are donated so they don't have much say to the components before they build it. The rear sight is a Champion and the gun was built as a "combat" pistol if they wouldve installed it in the factory dovetail slot it would've hung over possibly interfering with the hammer or your thumb trying to manipulate the hammer. So what Brad did was cut the dovetail out a bit for the round part of the sight and cut a new dovetail forward for the sight to mount in. If you look really close to the pic you can see where the original dovetail was, its where the round adjustment screw is

did I mention it's a double stack? the grips are recessed, same grip width as standard but double stack, first I've ever seen like it

Re: Award gun-Caspian 1911

The rear sight is moved forward so when it's in a Safariland 6004 or a Blade Tech WRS it's got a little protection from getting banged around inside vehicles, aircraft, ships, and buildings.

On the end of the slide you run just a little higher risk of banging the rear sight blade and cracking the luminous dot capsules.

Ahh. Not really all that competitive then, except in Limited-10.

Re: Award gun-Caspian 1911

The AMU Shop has a barrel test fixture where they can lock it down and shoot groups out of it before it even goes into a pistol.

They can accept or reject the barrel before the first fitting to determine whether or not it's worth the shop time.

Re: Award gun-Caspian 1911

hafta remember it wasn't built as an IPSC gun, it was built entirely as a duty combat gun

also gotta say, I'm Distinguished in pistol, and Pres hundred in pistol, I've played with a few pistolas and this thing shoots like a wet dream, I would shoot it at Perry as a Bullseye gun and not think twice about it. Yeah yeah minus the beavertail and such, point is it shoots that good
