Anybody have an AWC thundertrap, I have one being approved at ATF, just need their paper work to pick it up. Will be using it on a barrett 98. How is it?

Re: AWC Thundertrap

I have one for my .338LM I like it very much. With subsonic ammo it is very quiet but will only go out flat to about 80 yards or so. With full power ammo you still dont need protection but it makes some significant noise mostly gas escaping. You will like it. PG

Not sure I follow you on this? What do you mean its makes some significant noise?

Pics of your setup?

Re: AWC Thundertrap

I run one on a 300 win. mag and a .308 both are extremley quite. I run 3 different AWC units a Raider on 5.56 and a Stalker on .22mags and 17HMR'S . All are highly recommendable units. All are capable of indoor usage without hearing protection. +1 for AWC products

Re: AWC Thundertrap

Let me begin by saying, I have many suppressors........ I have owned 3 AWC cans (since they are in AZ). I still have two. I DID have a .338LM Thundertrapp. The suppression was good and also reduced recoil quite a bit. That being said, it definitely had it's drawbacks. My POI was 6" left and 5" higher than non-suppressed. It was repeatable but for me not acceptable. When I talked to Chris he said POI will change. Simple solution, I sold it...... It could have been a bad apple. It could be it just did not like the Sako TRG. I can't say for sure.

I also have a Ops Inc, for my M24A2 it rocks. POI is almost identical to non-suppressed. Looking for a Surefire FA338SS for the newest .338LM. We will see how it goes.

What did you wind up with for your TRG can? I am trying to decide what to get.
Thanks.

Re: AWC Thundertrap

So, you had POI shift of 6" left and 5" higher? That is over 8" off, and Chris was ok with that? I'm sure you spoke with him but if you are about to come back and tell me at 100 yards you thought your can was responsible for being 8" off and Chris didn't ask for that can back, well I would be amazed. Short of a baffle strike, bad apple doesn't begin to explain it. Like badly reloaded subsonics, that don't stabilize, and hit a baffle..

- What year can?
- At what range was it 8" off center?
- Did you try the can on anything else other than the Sako?
- Did you try it on your M24A2?

Re: AWC Thundertrap

I sold the Sako TRG to buy my current rifle, a Remington XS 40...... The Sako kept getting caught on my backpack. I do use the rifle to hunt. The Remington is a great rifle! I am buying a Surefire can FA338SS.

do you have the stainless steel one or the TI version? what is your POI change on vs off?

Re: AWC Thundertrap

Its the inconel steel one...Yes it does have a POI shift but I also have a 28in barrel so 2 pounds of steel hanging off 28in of barrel is going to change POI...Its inevitable...I shot it a few times to see how much it was off and the next 2000rnds it has been on every shot...Never shoot without it so no POI shift

Re: AWC Thundertrap

had a Thundertrap for 9 years this summer. It's been on a 20" .308 most of it's life.. probably about 1200 rounds, and I'm thinking of moving it over to a 24" 300wm and wondering how it will hold up.

I've shot it subsonically with EBR thumpers and some KY (wire pulling gel) and it's as quiet as a pellet rifle.. and REALLY eats up the recoil and noise of my 175grn hand loads.

I love AWC cans!
