It would be interesting to hear AI’s reason for adding a gas hole to the AXSR. I’d wager it’s a dumb dumb indicator that there’s been a gas leak as opposed to keeping gas off your face. I don’t think the action type needs it. The bolt design differs from a Remington type. The Remington has large rectangular cuts to accommodate the bolt lugs in the receiver, which vent gas directly at your face. The AI receiver just has a round hole, which gets corked up by the full diameter bolt body when it’s in battery. The gas escape would be along the extractor on the bolt head and into the magazine, not towards your face. These rifles have been fielded in combat all over the world, and every variant except the 50 cals, and now the AXSR did it without a gas hole. I can’t remember ever hearing of someone taking an injury after rupturing a case in an AI. On the other hand, Remington designs commonly shoot fragments into the shooter’s face during a case rupture, despite a gas hole.
In other words, don’t lose any sleep over it.
