Badger bolt knob

Re: Badger bolt knob

Are all bolt knobs done in the same way as this video?

That looks pretty cool, I dont know much about machining but i would have thought the original knob was cut off and something else welded... which would be shit

Re: Badger bolt knob

To the original poster.

I initially put in my suggestion for GAP to do your bolt knob as they have a video seen in other posts in this thread, depicting them putting a bolt knob on in a couple of minutes. They also guarantee a one day turn around time for bolt knob installations.

Other members here suggested other smiths including Hooper Ordnance. I did not knock the quality of any smiths, I did not say anything other than you would be happier with the quick turnaround time of GAP.

I erased my post as I saw that Hooper seemed upset by my suggesting GAP rather than him so in the fairness of unbias, I erased my suggestion.

What do I get for my suggestion?

However, when considering Hooper Ordnance, consider the character. The man who posted this vicious and unwarranted attack. Is that the man you want working on your rifle?

My only crime was suggesting another smith.

Re: Badger bolt knob

Mike that thread in the Bear Pit was very unprofessional and put a bitter taste in my mouth towards Hooper. I can only imagine if he got mad at a customer while working on a rifle. I'm not much for drama but that should have gone to PM if anything.

Re: Badger bolt knob

Another guy you can look up is Monteboy. Matt does AWESOME work, really really does quality work, and very fast, fair price, and a heckuva nice guy. cant say enough. he did one of my two remington 700 bolt knobs with a badger, and it turned out gorgeous.

i would highly recommend him. theres a thread over at sniper central in the gallery forum with lots and lots of pics of ones hes done or doing, start to finish. i would recommend you give him some consideration.

Re: Badger bolt knob

Az precision does really nice work. My new bolt will be on the way up there sometime this month. Even if you wait for a week, you can have the whole bolt cerakoted which is really nice.

Re: Badger bolt knob

AZ Precision will get all my bolt knob work. He's done four for me and will be doing a couple more in the not to distant future. Besides, he'll do them to custom specs if you want.

Re: Badger bolt knob

Mike, at the time of your post, which was erased when I was responding to it, you were the only one who did a direct comparison between Hooper and GAP in terms of this service (and put Hooper under somewhat of a negative light on turnaround time), while everyone else just named their choice and was done with it. Maybe that was the reason why Hooper took offense? Just wondering but have you used Hooper for this service before? From your original response to Hooper I would assume not, because you were asking him if he could do a one-day turnaround... So if you haven't used him before, how can you tell others to use GAP and not Hooper because you "know" GAP can turn it around in one day and you "think" Hooper can't?

I have only used AZPrecision before for a custom knob, and therefore I can only recommend Keith for fast turnaround and great communication (very important to me). I have "seen" pics of others here and they all look pretty good, but that is the extend of my experience.

Just wanted to chime in so others know both GAP and Hooper were mentioned together in your original post so Hooper was responding to your comparison. If you had only suggested GAP in your post it would have been considered a simple suggestion like everyone else.

First off, the thread I posted was very unprofessional and I guess I should have gone over your head to Frank but I am really not one to do that, I try and keep things in the open.

I do apologize to Frank and the members of this site who had to witness the nasty wording and unprofessional way I conducted myself last evening. It was out of character for me and I do sincerely apologize.

To Mike:
We were to avoid each other from my understanding but as you seem to want the last word I will give you that, just do not delete this post:

Everyone knows you beat the GAP drum as I have done in the past as they are certainly worthy of the following they have. Everyone has their opinion. However when you post this:
"Hooper is slow, go with GAP, be Happy." as a moderator here, I took it as a slight. It certainly was not a positve comment.

Yes, I do sometimes run behind but I do not remember doing any work for you. Just helped you with transfers sometimes not even charging you. Matter of fact, I seem to remember some decent friendly conversations.

So, what I posted last night should have been done in a PM. I get that and for that reason alone, I aplologize for taking it it to the Bear Pit.

Just stop trying to bash me. I could probably come up with some ugly emabarrassing retaliations.

Hooper

Re: Badger bolt knob

I am not going to delete this post Hooper however I will address your statements.

It is no secret that I promote GAP. I have bought quite a few rifles from them, I consider George a good friend as well as the other smiths at GAP, and I think they put out a great product (as do others).

Second, I wish you would post a screen shot of that quote because A) I do not remember saying "Hooper is slow" B) I have no way of knowing that you're are slow as I've never bought a product or a service from you (outside of our lunch meetings and FTF) and C) I have zero reason to bash you...zero. So why I would post "Hooper is slow" doesn't make sense.

So when you posted "Thanks" and you quoted my post, I thought to myself I may seem overly biased and I did not want to offend you or slight you so I deleted both your and my posts so as to be fair. I thought that was the fair thing to do and what did I get in return? That Bear Pit post. How you can, in any way shape or form, justify that post to me or anyone here is beyond me.

I do not want to bash you, I am not trying to bash you, I have nothing against you or your business, nor am I trying to hurt your business in any way, shape or form. If I posted something that offended you, then I apologize. If you think that I have an axe to grind with you, you couldn't be more wrong.

Finally, you can call this "getting the last word" or you can call it trying to straighten out a misunderstanding. Either way, the ball is in your court. If you want to continue a dialogue, I welcome that via PM. If you want to ignore me, that is your choice. If you want to "retaliate", I don't think that would bode well for either of us. So the choice is yours. I will react to your decision in kind.

Re: Badger bolt knob

Well, back to the original post.

I have a GAP install on 338L and I have a Hooper install on a 308. Can't tell them apart (except one has larger bolt face), the work is the same quality. The turn around time may be another issue based on the shop load at the time you send things in.

I've seen both of the two mentioned get behind in the work load. Happens to all gunsmiths, no one is immune. Shit happens.

JMHO, the last two posts here should have been in PM. Damn good thing I am not a moderator.

Mike should really change his "have fins will travel" to "Un-repenant GAP ho". No offense Mike, all in fun. To lighten up the otherwise "unrelated to bolt knob" bullshit.

Re: Badger bolt knob

I just ordered a hollowed out Varmint knob from AZPrecision. Smaller than a Badger, lighter than the standard Varmint. I will probably purchase a Nubby knob in the future for comparison. Great turn around time, and can't wait to see it in person. (Trying to get the topic back on track and throw out a +1.)
