I thought about getting a Badger FTE muzzle break for a Remington 700P in 300 winmag. Are they effective?

Hell Yes!
Only thing is you have to have your barrel contoured for them.
Mine is on a 300WM and it made a world of difference in recoil.

I think there are better brakes out there for the 300win. Good all around brake I would go with a gentry brake. I have a buddy that has one of his brakes on a 300 winmag and it is great!!! One of the most quite brakes I have been around. It your going to do a lot of laying in the dirt I would go with an apa fat bastard. I love badger stuff but there are better brakes.

I was under the impression that they "clamped" on...if they require having the barrel turned down or profiled, I think I'm going to look into having the barrel threaded and put a thread-on brake on it. I have never had a brake on any of my bolt rifles, what are some good choices for a thread on brake?

Yes! I have on my .300WM and the recoil feels less than a .308.

It is definitely a thread on brake. There is a bolt used to cinch down when you have the brake in the correct position. This way you don't have to have your barrel threads timed to the brake threads.

M40, the FTE is a clamp on style break, but also it is a thread on/clamp on break. Please see the link below:

The one hting I've noticed with the FTE is it tends to be a little weightier. I've got one but may be a little biased because I mostly use a surefire.

I will say that after about 80 rounds downrange, I love this break.
Minimal recoil, easy to reacquire target.
Two thumbs up.
