Has any body used a SS badger lug on a 700 with a factory varmite barrel. I have been thinking of putting one on the my m24 build since i plan on using one when i get the rock barrel i thought why not just put it on early. The barrel is not installed yet so it is Do-able.

However there is the extra cost of indexing the barrel so i was wandering if it would be worth the $.

Is there really a gain in accuracy with a factory barrel?

With the ammount of expierenced shooters on the Hide i know this is the place to ask.

Thanks

Re: Badger recoil lug question

Are you saying you want to pull the factory barrel, slip the badger lug on, screw it back together?

It doesn't work like that, the badger is thicker, so you'd have a little issue with excessive headspace......

Re: Badger recoil lug question

Not worth the trouble on a stock rifle, especially because it's thicker so you will need barrel machining and head space reset. It's also something that will not "add" accuracy...yes. it's thicker, possibly more stable but really that only matters in a hard recoiling caliber for better stability when bed in the stock.

Re: Badger recoil lug question

Yes i was aware of the fact that i would have to index the barrel for the thicker lug, my smith was going to put the barrel on, and said it would cost a little extra to have the barrel indexed for the lug, so the headspace would be right.

I was just wandering if this would be worth the money in accuracy benefits, and figured i would give it some thought because i was going to go with a badger lug when i have the rock barrel installed down the road.

Thanks

Re: Badger recoil lug question

If the barrel is not from your action it is a great idea because it might be to tight or to loose in the headspace fitting a thicker recoil lug will allow the gunsmith to headspace the barrel correctly. it is a very easy job to do and as the rifle is apart you may aswell. what i would also do is get him to lapp the lugs on the action and then to place the action on a mandrel and square the face of the action this small amount of work is a benifite on most rem 700 actions it is not fully truing the action but the faces of the actions can be aout a lot and sometimes the lugs only mating on one. so if you lapped in the lugs correctly and fitted this barrel to a factory lug you might have excessive headspace and if the action is faced you definatly would so get him to do those things and the thicker lug and when you have the Rock fitted you will be good to go if you were not thinking of a full truing job.

Re: Badger recoil lug question

If i were to do all of the above would i be able to still get it trued 100% when the better barrel is installed, or is it not needed? I think this sound like a plan.
Thanks

Re: Badger recoil lug question

yes you can get it 100% trued it depends on how long you are going to be using this barrel? if you are going to be using this barrel for a long time then i would do it if not just fit the barrel with the thicker recoil lub and have the bolt lugs lapped.
