Ballistic program apps

I’m taking my first tactical long range class on Friday. One Of the requirements for the class was a ballistic program for either iPhone or iPad. I Google searched ( mistake?) for ‘best ballistic apps‘) Several comments came from Snipers Hide saying TRASOL was an excellent choice. Who am I to argue with you guys? So I bought the full version. I put what info I have on my load in and the program churned out the numbers. I just got an email tonight from the tutor (I imagine to all students) that we should all have the Applied Ballistics app which is, without a doubt, the best program there is. I don’t have a problem ponying up for Applied Ballistics if I need it. What say you all? TRASOL or AB?
As usual your advice is gratefully appreciated.

My guess is the instructor wants you to have that app because that is the one he knows how to run. I don't think you HAVE to have it. But, if your program is not working well for your rifle during the class, you may not get much help from the instructor because they can't run your app.

There are a lot of variable here.
$1000 class? --> probably worth getting the app.
$150 Class --> pass.
You've been in the game a while --> get the app.
First serious long range event --> use what ya got
If you have the technical know how to fluently run a different app--> use what ya got
No technical skills and want the instructor to make your app work--> get the app.

If you have an app, I think your best thing to do is learn that app really well rather than trying to learn 2 or 3. (beware of the man with one...app). Once you have the first app figured out then try another one and build your knowledge.

If the instructor had thier way you would also have a $9K rifle and $4k scope. It makes it easier for them for you have the best of the best.

I like the AB app but I like my kestrel with AB way more. Seems like I get better first round affects with the kestrel, the AB app doesn’t even get used for shooting anymore just for playing with bullets and understanding downrange energy.

I’m a hack. I like Strelok Pro. You can choose from a bunch of reticles and targets (as well as all the ballistic mumbo-jumbo). For example, here’s a prairie dog with the Minox MR4 reticle shooting CCI subsonic segmented HP .22 LR, 5mph 90 degree wind, zero slope:

I wish it listed the wind info in the readout.
