Rifle Scopes Bargain Leupold?

Hey Im new to this site and this is my first post. I like the no BS help that goes on here, so I figured you might be able to help me. My friend offered to sell me his Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M3 Illum. Reticle. I know this is a $1200 plus scope, so I offered him $500. To my surprise he accepted. The issue is that he cant seem to get it to hold zero while mounted to his FNAR. He has solid rings and mounts so that wasnt the problem. He sent it back to Leupold and they sent it back saying there was no problem that they could find. He says he could never trust it again so he wants to get rid of it.
So I guess my question is, should I buy it? Does Leupold hold up their warranty when there is a transfer of owners?

I have heard if your scope base isn't bedded you can have tons of eerie probs. Maybe that could be what was going onj with your buddies rifle. Just what I heard, I could be wrong but maybe someone with more experiance could chime in.

You're talking about shimming a scope base, sometimes the front vs. rear will be out of whack and you can bend your mount or scope if you tighten them down too much.

I'm willing to bet the guy's friend has a loose scope mount or just doesn't know what he's doing; either way it's a 500$ M3 which is a good deal, I would buy it all day long.

With respect, you figure wrong. Leupy took three tries on my scope to agree with me that it was faulty. They did fix it to my satisfaction by replacing it, but assuming that they'll get it right the first or even second time is not realistic.

OP,
I'd buy your friend's scope in a second. If it proves to have the same problem for you, send it back and keep sending it back until it's right. The customer service there is good, you just have to work for it.

Great warranty to whoever owns it .
not the best glass but better than alot of the garbage
youll find out there.
Im not wealthy enough to afford great glass but the Luepy
is good enough for now
In the event I win the powerball tonite sun I will give my luepys away on the hide.

Just make sure before you buy it that it's genuine leupold there are lots of fakes out there and they are pretty convincing.

OP, if he offered $500, and you accepted the offer, then you just bought a scope.

Shotgun, I disagree about Leupold's customer service being 'great': It's not bad. Instead of meaningful quality control they have a lifetime warranty. So if you can identify what is wrong they will fix it (with the exception that if the reticle is canted three degrees or less you're on your own).

So, if the reticle is level I would consider buying the scope. Then I would check the subtension of the reticle with the power ring against the hard stop, box the scope to at least 30 MOA, and send it back if necessary. This process will help you learn as much as possible about your new scope.

BTW, the last 3.5-10x40 Mil Dot I purchased was for $550. And if I were you I would consider the M1 knobs instead.

Yeah I had to call a couple times and write a letter to get them to fix mine and the reticle is still canted, but everything else is tits so I can't really complain.

Ok I have no idea what this means.
If I could possibly figure out whats wrong with this thing, I would try to help fix it for my friend. Gotta look out for my boy ya know. The mount is solid, torqued and its to a picatinny rail, If its a fake leupy, than its a damn good one if Leupys repair div couldnt tell. I have a feeling its his shitty reloads, but he has never had any problems like this before. He will get 2 shots to group, the next one will be a wierd flier, than the next will fly off somewhere else. If the scopes moving in the rings or the mount moving on the rail, wouldnt the groups just move around? as in 2 group here, 3 group there etc? Its not him either, he is a damn good shot, actually the best non-military trained shot I have ever seen.

Of course I could be wrong, but my statement is based on probability and not certainty. That a lazy Leupold tech dismissed the scope is less probable than any of the other factors that could be the problem. If the OP discovered nothing beyond what he has stated, I would not shy away from the scope based on what may or may not have happened at Leupold. The fact that it was examined by Leupold reduces the probability by some amount that the scope is FUBAR.
