Anyone have any experience with which is the best weight TSX to use in a 10.5 - 11.5 SBR? Looking for max expansion with min of 12" of penetration?

Go 55, 62, 70?

Gonna stuff a bunch of TAC behind it.

TIA

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

I have no SBR expirence, but have shot them all quite a bit with TAC.
The 70 grain is out for your twist as it is marginal in a 16" 8 twist. Loves the 7 twist.
55 will be fine of course, 62 is about the breaking area for your twist. I would push it hard and not use the suppressor until you fire some cold ammo in cold weather to at least 200 yards and varify stabilization. I am going to guess it will be the 55 you choose with that slow twist. It will penetrait fine.

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

Again, no SBR experience here...yet (have one on the way).

Black Hills 50gr 5.56mm TSX is supposed to have the best penetration/barrier perfomance, even better than the 70gr TSX. It seems to retain its petals better even after going through a windshield. Withouth barrier, it will reliably expand to 50 cal within 2 or so inches in balistic gell testing. I think this is the most promising loading for factory ammo out there for SBR application. This bullet is not the same as the 50gr TSX available for reloading. It was specially developed for Black Hills as a barrier blind projectile. It's supposed to be better than mk318 or M855A1

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

Thank you John.

And ideally that is what I am looking for - what is the best TSX load that I can either load or buy for a 10.5 - 11.5 1:7 gun?

Stands to reason (without confirmation) that a less than 70 grn projo would be better for the velocity which would then aid in expansion.

I will check out the BH offering.

Good luck

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

I shoot Barnes 62 Grainers out of a Noveske 12.5 with AA 2460 at 24.1-25 grains 2.260 COAL. They shoot 1-1.5 MOA at a hundred with a 1-3 Leupold CQT. They are my defense loads as Barnes is a little expensive to shoot at the range too much. I have not checked penetration so this maybe of no use to you.

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

I love the 50 and 55gr. TSX ammo, I'm not a reloader however I have determined that the BH's 5.56 50gr TSX is my PD/HD/SHTF ammo for my 10.5" SBR. While I have not done much testing on the BH's loading given it's cost and the work already performed by Doc, I have tested the Barnes VOR-TX 55gr. ammo and keep lots of it on hand as well to supplement the BH's variety. While the TSX at least commercially loaded is not the most accurate by a wide margin, it's more than accurate to get the job done.

Here is some data and such on the VOR-TX 55gr. ammo:

These TSXs are such wicked projectiles...fully expanded TSXs after hitting a steel target @ 500 + yds

Stick w/ the 50gr. or 55gr TSX unless you need LR capabilities in which case the 70gr. TSX would be perhaps better.

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

Mo Zam prick,
I tried to be helpful, as I have shot thousands of rounds of the three Barnes TS bullets from 16" AR's. Using Ramshot TAC. I do deer culling and have shot many with the bullets mentioned. Out to beyond 600 yards with the 70 grain. Sorry that proves no expirence to you.
Anyone who ask about shooting a 70 grain BTS out of a 10.5 or slower twist barrel is lacking in fundimental knowledge of shooting and ballistics. I did not want to point it out, but since you smarted off, it is stupid to ask.
It is true I do not have your apparent expirence of being a complete tool working with a short tool.
I am ready for my timeout now. I am too busy hunting to post much now anyway.

Re: Barnes TSX and SBRs?

Think about it this way, the reason that heavier bullets such as the 75-77 gr variety are used in 5.56 is because they are non-expanding and meant to yaw and fragment. So by going heavier, the bullets are longer and tend to fragment at lower velocities compared to 55gr bullets which extend the lethal range of these bullets. Since the Barnes TSX bullets are not meant to fragment but instead expand pretty much like a pistol round then you might as well maximize on the velocity coming out of the shorty barrel so YOU CAN ACTUALLY extend your range. Barnes particularly does not expand well/fully if the velocity is below a certain level, so out of a short barrel with that type of bullet i would choose 50gr to maximize velocity. Hope that makes sense.

10.5 was the length of the barrel, not the twist. In his third post he specifies a 10.5-11.5" barrel, 1:7 twist. I assure you MZB has a fundamental grasp of shooting, I've been reading his posts for close to a decade now.
