Barrel Accuracy Question

I have a 300wsm and 300ultra I am building. I am stumped as to which barrel to go with. Do I go with the 26" long fluted barrel for added fps? Or, do I go with the shorter thicker 22" fluted barrel for added integrity(assuming weights are the same)? Thanks guys.

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

I was under the impression that a longer thinner barrel had less integrity, thus, less accuracy than a thicker barrel. Maybe I should ask;
If you were building a 1000yd hunting rifle in 300wsm which barrel would you put on it?
Which for a 300ultra?

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

If it's a pencil thin hunting contour then yes, it would heat up quicker and probably loose accuracy. The fact that you said 26" fluted tells me it has some contour to it. Are you building a hunting rifle you want to shoot targets at 1K yards with or a 1000yd target rifle that you want to take hunting?

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

Primary use is hunting, so I would like to keep it somewhat lighter. I will practice out to ~1000yds, but realistically shoot at animals out to 500(perfect conditions). I will sacrifice weight to gain accuracy though.

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

The 500yds is the goal. I practice 2-4 times a month. I practice at 300+yds. It isn't much, but I am consistantly within a 6" tin at 300 and do pretty well out to 500. That is why I want a different barrel that will help my accuracy. So you would go the short fluted barrel?

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

Can you tell us what your setup is? What is the rifle, stock, glass that you are using? Not saying that it isn't possible, but I doubt the barrel that you have right now is the weakest link in this shooter/rifle setup.

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

Rifle: Browning A-bolt 300wsm with stock pencil barrel and aftermarket brake.

Glass: Bushnell 6500 4.5-30, but upgrading very soon to NF 5.5-22

Stock: normal since I can't find a good aftermarket for it. It has been steel and pillar bedded.

It shoots well in groups, but cold bore shot is very different from shot # 20 even after cooling.

Also, at what caliber should you go from a 360 brake to ports on sides only to avoid the dust blowup?

On your cold bore shot does it have any fowling in it? If not that can make a difference also. Food for thought.

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

I just this past spring rebarrelled my savage mod.11 300wsm with a 26 inch SS Douglas Heavy from Sharp shooter supply, no flutes. Very happy with it. I can send 3 rounds down range quickly and still maintain 1/2 moa accuracy at any distance then I let it cool and so far I'm out to 800yds on paper and steel, and running 7 hits for 10 shots at woodchucks between 500 & 700 yds and the missed shots are just wide of the chuck when they are standing up. I went with the Douglas because it is one of the lower priced barrels but it still had nice reviews. Also this is my first attempt at customizing and I did not want to risk messing up a really good barrel like a Brux ,Kreiger or Lilja.

""It shoots well in groups, but cold bore shot is very different from shot # 20 even after cooling.""

Make sure your barrel is completely free floated.
I had the same issue with the thinner barrel and that is why I rebarrelled and opened up the barrel channel a bit on the B&C Duramax stock.. I did not get any flutes done and the gun came in at just about 10 lbs. thats with a Vortex Viper 6 x 20 x44, burris rings ,9 to 13 inch bipod, and the dura max stock.
I do not have a brake of any kind, and I'm shooting a 180 Nos. AB a bit under 3000fps. Are you handloading? For my setup I found that R-19 worked the best with the 180s.
Best of luck with your projects and be safe this fall..

Re: Barrel Accuracy Question

The barrel is fowled when doing this. I only clean it really good if it looks dirty or starts shooting different (cause it couldn't be me).

The barrel is free floated and pillar bedded. It is one of those pencil thin hunting barrels. I want to upgrade, but don't want to pack a 26"douglas heavy around the hills here in Idaho
