For those of you with real world experience, have you seen a difference in performance based on barrel contour? Im looking at a 6.5 , and am 99% sold on a .260.

Likely somewhere in the 24-26 inch range. Is there a particular contour I would benefit from?

Used mostly for paper/steel out to, and past 1K. Tactical matches, and bench shooting. Possibly drug into the woods for some whitetail action.

Thanks

You quickly reach a point of diminishing returns with barrel weight. For 308W and smaller that begins with the Rem varmint contour. Remember everything is a compromise. Weight will wear on you long before length.

No, it's not. I'm a big fan of the Palmas, myself. The standard Palma is plenty heavy, and a nice contour, but if you want something a bit meatier, the heavy palma is a natural choice.

I'm surprised how relatively unpopular the palmas are!

Re: Barrel contour for a 6.5????

I have a 24 inch heavy palma and it is a joy to shoot, added a small muscle brake and this rifle doesn't move enough to get off target at any range.

Palma contours are excellent! Light Palma (cut to length) is excellent for most hunting. Medium and heavy Palma's are great for precision work. I would limit yourself to no heavier than a Heavy Palma contour cut to 26 inches. My opinion is that anything heavier is just dead weight, and anything longer is going to give you sub-par returns.

Yes, I was looking at this barrel as well. So very tempting!

Yep, I'm with you.

I put a 26" M40 on my rifle, then replaced it with a 28" Palma. Overall the rifle balances better, and is lighter.

I used to think you needed a big fat barrel. Then I got my TRG42, which essentially has a medium palma.

Only thing not great about a palma is long strings of fire with an overbore cartridge. My 284 handles 5-6 shots without getting very hot, but more than that warms it up pretty good.

Re: Barrel contour for a 6.5????

I have several Remington varmint contoured barrels and two m40/m24’s contours. M40/m24 is fine if you don’t need to move much with it and are not supporting the weight of the gun in alternative positions, if you are it gets heavy after a short period.

Remington varmint is great but heats up faster, that is what is on my 260 and after about 12-15 rapid shots it gets pretty hot. It is still my favorite contour and works well for what I do, long range steel, dot drills and hunting.

That said my next long range rifle will likely wear a med palma as is has a little more meat without getting excessive and my next hunting rifle is going to wear a #6 as it weights the same as a rem varmint but will throw the balance point just a little more toward the shooter than the rem varmint does.

As for length, I am happy with the 24" remington varmint my 260 wears and in a manners T4 tock it isnt awkward in balance nor weight.

Re: Barrel contour for a 6.5????

I have a Bartlein 8 twist, heavy palma in transit as we speak. I figure if I don't end up liking it I can have it re-contoured. Obviously I can't add to it, so I figured I'd start out big and go fro there.

Re: Barrel contour for a 6.5????

Being primarily a hunter, I have played with several #2 contours. I have never been successful in getting them to shoot as well as heavier barrels, specifically #4s and up. I have observed definite accuracy improvements over lighter contours with #4 and heavier barrels. I also agree with another post, in that you can get to diminishing returns with heavier contours. As an example, in bench rest, light varmint class groups nearly as well as heavy does.

I am a big fan of Heavy M40 contours. I have 3 of them now, but then again I am 6'5 330lbs and like the meaty barrels. They do get heavy though... Personally, if weight is a concern, go Med Palma and call it a day.
