Looking at getting a Brux barrel for my 700 and sending it off for the LRI group buy. Going with 223 AI. Mainly to be used for varmint hunting here in IN plus it may get taken out west for prairie dogs.

I'm thinking #4 contour in a McMillan Game Scout Edge configuration stock. Barrel length between 22 and 24".

    Thoughts from the Hide?

    Thanks!

When it comes to contour my preferences are Rem Varmint or Medium Palma. With Med. Palma being the slight preference edge. Anything heavier in the M24/M40 or MTU range you usually either see a only used as a safe queen/range fairy or you see a gun that a guy wishes was lighter and less front heavy. Sporter weight barrels have their place too but not on a varminter.

I would go with a Rem Varmint. I have a Brux 1/7 and it works fine after shooting multiple rounds downrange. I think it's perfect for use against prairie dogs and ground hogs - not too heavy, but reliable for sending many rounds downrange; an all around good compromise.

The rifle that sees the most use from me has a #4 Bartlein on it. 25" long measured from the bolt face, and measures .750 at the muzzle. Balances great, and overall weight is about perfect at 10# ready to run.

Rem varmint has worked very well on my .223 ai. I wouldn't go any lighter or much heavier.

I recently picked up my most recent build in which I used the action from a Rem 700 SPS Tactical .223. Caliber is now a .22-250. I went with a Brux MTU 1-8" twist. OP, you have been given sound advice from the previous posters. Everyone has different ideas and preferences. I tend to favor MTU or Heavy Varmint. However, I am in the minority on this for both varminters and precision shooters. In your case I would suggest a med Palma or Sendero contour.

As for the Brux barrel...I am currently running Krieger 5R's (four rifles with Krieger), Bartlein 5R, Schneider P5, and now Brux. This Brux took all of 5 shots to see substantial reduction in copper fouling during barrel break in. My Brux barreled .22-250 is an absolute hammer for accuracy with 80gr AMAX and Berger VLD. I am as pleased with Brux as is am with my other barrels, which is to say I am very impressed.

As strange as it may sound, out of the barrels I currently own and shoot regularly. Only one brand uses button rifling instead of single point cut...and that is also my favorite barrel. It is a Schneider with Gary Schneider's version of polygon rifling or P5. It is on a .300 win mag with a McMillan G30 action. This barrel is super fast, extremely accurate, and does not seem to foul at all. My cleaning process includes using my borescope afterwards to ensure I cleaned adequately, etc. Every time I view this Schneider through my borescope, I am amazed at the mirror-like smooth finish with zero tool marks, etc. I don't know if all Schneider P5 barrels are as good as mine seems to be or not. Just saying I used to be adamant about only buying cut rifled barrels and then it had to be Krieger as well. This Brux is also beautiful through the borescope, so it is of little wonder that is produces excellent accuracy with nearly zero copper fouling.

#5 rock 23" in a game scout. Have had 223ai in Mountain rifle, #5, rem varmint, and heavy varmint. #5 is pretty handy. Will build another like this.

Medium palma or RemVar. I prefer a +1 if given the choice.

    Don't see much point to a 223 or 223AI longer than 22".

If me, it'd be Rem Varm or Light Palma, 21-22", prob fluted for looks. A #4 round would not be bad either. A #2 - #3 for a walking varminter would be fine in 22 cal given mass in bbl. Personally like the 221 FB w/40 vmax and 222, Lil Gun will push 3600-3700. Both very accurate, personally never had a 223 shoot as well, just my luck I guess. Good luck w/build.

I did a mullerworks #5 @22" for my 223 ai. With the 22cal hole it seems similar to a varmint contour in a bigger diameter caliber. It makes for a really good lightweight match/medium weight hunting rifle. Rifle with optic in a manners t2 weighs just under 10lbs
