It's almost time to rebarrel my 243. It's a stock Remy action and barrel. I want to go with a faster twist rate to stabilize the 115 grains projos. Always like the Bartlein barrel. Went to their website, the wait time is anywhere 8 months to 1years. Good for them, but not so good for me. So, with that, what other would you recommend? also what contour? This is strictly for taking out metal gongs. I am going to put it in a Manners stock MCS-T1. My son is already eyeing that project so a muzzle brake is needed for him (only 11y/o). With that, thanks guys.

McGowan, Shilen and Pac-nor all have a barrel nut design available so you can do the barrel swap yourself. It is a savage style setup.

Re: barrel for a 243

Rock, Obermeyer, Schneider, and of course Bartlein, all good barrels. I would shoot for a 7.5-1/8 twist 24-26" with the 243, works well with the heavier (115gr +) bullets. As far as contour, its all about how much weight you can handle, medium Palma contour is a good compromise, otherwise a #7 contour is a good choice.

I have a 27" Schneider 7.5 twist on my .243 and love the barrel. Super accurate. Contour is a personal choice but seeing as you will be ringing steel with it just get the basic M40/M24 #7 contour.

If you want a removable brake then check out the R&D brake. They work very well. Used one today on a .308 and it cut recoil drastically. Blends well to the barrel also as it comes in a few different contours you can get to match your barrel.

Building one right now

Bartlein 7.5 twist MTU, My wait time was about 2 weeks. I posted in the WTB section and had several to chose from. I also posted in WTB at 6mmbr.com. Those boys buy 3-5 barrels at a time and it is a bit easier to talk them out of a really desireable high wait time barrel. just my .02

Re: barrel for a 243

Of course its a personal choice, but you don't really need a break. My 8 year old shoots my 243 great with no break. When you screw a #7 or heavier barrel on it, the recoil is very mild.

Re: barrel for a 243

Going to building my .243 soon, I've had the 7.5 5R Rock barrel for a while. Thinking of going AI, any particular recommendations on a chamber reamer, free bore, lead etc. for projos from 75gr on up w/ Lapua brass.?
