It seems like the more popular ones are Shilen (which I have already talked to them), Krieger, and Rock Creek. What about Bartlein, UMSS and Ultra Match. Haven't seen to many reviews on them. If you have any experice with any of these I would like to hear your thoughts on them so I can make a better "educated" choice.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

I've had all the ones you mention except UMSS and haven't got a bad one yet.

My last barrel fas from Bartlein and it was about the best I've looked at through the Hawkeye but I was most impressed with the 5R rifling , was the first time I got an upclose look at it.

Brux also makes some realy good barrels and have been told by several very well respected makeers that you coulden't tell the differance between a Brux and a Kreiger and thats saying ALOT for the Brux.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

you are going to see a more accurate rifle if the smith is good and does a good chamber job. You can go wrong with any of the first 3 that you mentioned

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

Mine is a Bartlein from GAP and I've been very happy with it.
I'd go with what the smith tells you and you should be alright.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

Did a recent barrel swap, had a Douglas on order. Gunsmith recommended a Shilen. So we order up one, waiting for the rifle to bedded and see what happens. Really don't think you could wrong with any manufacture these days.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

Rock Creek 5R's is my first choice, second goes to Krieger. I have heard Bartleins are just as good as Rock Creek. I have always like cut rifled barels but I have heard good stuff about Broughton 5C barrels. Any one of those will be GTG. I just prefer Rock Creeks based on what I have seen them do.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

I have only used Obermeyer and Kreiger. The Oby was on a GAP 308 and was an excellent shooter. It cleaned up easily as well and produced better velocity than I expected.

The Kreigers are in 308 and 338LM and came with my DT SRS. So far they are proving to be very accurate. They are also proving easy to clean. I would recommend either.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

I have 3 Bartleins, 2 Rocks and a Broughton 5C. All shoot excellent and clean with ease. Even after 400 rounds, no copper and minimal carbon. Well after cleaning them with wipe out, then chasing it with Sweets, I get zero blue patches. The powder I use is Reloader 15 and Viht. N140. I don't think you can go wrong with any custom manufacturer.

Re: Barrel for first .308 project

I have had mostly Hart and Krieger on my bench and hunting rigs. I have also had a couple from Clay Spencer. No complaints from any of them. Check out www.benchrest.com and see what's winning matches in group, hunter class, varmint for score, 600 yard and 1,000 yard.
