I had an AR explode on me the other day it destroyed the upper and lower receiver, it split the bolt carrier in half. However the barrel appears to escaped unscathed but I do not trust it. Does anyone know who could inspect it?

Re: barrel inspection

Sorry to hear about your problem, but come on man, if you are gonna bring a story like that here you better give us some pictures.
I would think your barrel would be OK since it was the only thing on the rifle that is disigned to have an explosion in it, but letting a Smith check it our wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: barrel inspection

Damn!!! Agree with Scott. Glad you're okay. I'd have have a hard time holding a cheek weld if/when that ever happens to me.

On the trust issue, I never trusted my first wife after she cheated on me...just sayin'. Get her tested (inspected) before you re-commit to her!

Now lay down some details for us to avoid please.

Re: barrel inspection

Glad you are OK! A "poster" for "why shoot with eye protection".

You say a "squib" detonated it? Please explain.

I have personally seen similar destruction due to:
o Reloads (improper charge / improper powder)
o Excessive throat erosion (often overlooked). How many rounds are through this?

Find a certified AR armorer if you really want an inspection / analysis.

In reality considering the condition, write it off as a "lesson in life".

Kevin

edit: It wasn't the squib that detonated it, but the good round fired after the squib. Lucky it was only the firearm damaged . . .

Re: barrel inspection

Squib to me would be an underpowered round left the bullet in the bore and once a live round went bang it cause it to blow up due to blockage.

Glad your OK. If it were me I would scrap the barrel, you dont want to take a chance in a hairline fracture that opens up due to heavy rates of fire that a bore camera might miss seeing.

Re: barrel inspection

Hack saw. Both the action and barrel. Don't trust a "check" by a gunsmith. As Greg states, time and time again, cumulative overloads can lead to sudden destruction. Who can tell when the chamber will let go after this event? Time to failure? Why test that? What is your eye/face/hand worth? Also, recheck time and time again your reloads. Again...pay attention. If something doesn't feel or sound right...stop immediately and find out what is different. You can weigh your reloads...5 or 10 at a time. A 25 grain difference in 5 will be immediately detected. Re: barrel inspection

how to inspect it? Yea, have it xray'd/ However I believe you're barrel is toast, period. If it had an obstruction and something came behind it, you simply don't ever trust it again.

Didn't you hear the difference in the sound of that squib? What about seeing where that previous round went? Never fire a round after a round sounds funny, until you check everything out.

I'm wondering if it was really a fire out of battery issue. If the bullet got stuck in the bbl it had to be passed the gas block for another round to feed. Did you manually cycle for the 2nd round to come out?

Re: barrel inspection

If I never had a reason to doubt a component, this one would do until it came along. By the time you got through paying an expert to tell you something I doubt even he would be able to bet his own life on, you could have had it replaced and spent enough to be well on your way to paying for the replacement.

Just do it.

Re: barrel inspection

thanks for all the info. I have already ordered another colt Socom barrel to replace this one. As far as the squib I was in a timed match and did not hear the primer fire (thought it was a miss fire.....this will NEVER happen again timed or not)
