Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

Is there going to be a big difference in mv between the two in .22lr?
Any reason why I would go with the shorter barrel?

I am just about to pull the trigger on a Savage MKII TR, but saw the MKII FVSR. Both have the bull barrel, and bolt knob. I would have to throw a Boyd's tacticool on the fvsr though. The main difference at that point would be the barrel length.

Re: Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

Velocity is slightly different and the way the rifle balances will be different. 16.5 will obviously weigh a litte less as well. It depends what you want to use the rifle for and then factor in your own personal preferences... I like long barrels, therefore I have a TR. Different strokes for different folks.

paper puncher, want to use it as a trainer. would eventually like to get it out to 300yards.

Re: Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

shorter, handier, lighter rifle...

I understand that you're not going to suppress it, anytime soon anyway, but a 16.5" barrel is plenty for a 22lr, if you're going to do any long range with it, you'll be running subsonic anyway, so there's really just no point in a longer barrel.

before anyone asks, the reason for subsonics, in long range 22lr, is that bullets destablize when they pass through the transonic barrier, if they start subsonic, they never transition, so the results downrange tend to be more consistent

We conducted our barrel length vs velocity test on March 21, 2009 at the North Alabama Shooting Association range in Sheffield, Alabama.

We used five CZ 452 .22 rifles with different barrel lengths and fired six rounds each of six different cartridge types. The chart below reflects the average velocity of the six rounds followed by the standard deviation of the six rounds.

The rifles were:
CZ 452 Ultra Lux with a 28.6" barrel
CZ 452 Special with a 24.8" barrel
CZ 452 American with a 22.5" barrel
CZ 452 FS with a 20.7" barrel
CZ 452 Classic with a 16.5" barrel (Fuzzy the Limey's old CMP Sporter rifle)

The cartridges were:
CB Longs = CB
RWS Subsonic Hollow Points = SSHP
Wolf Match Target = Standard Velocity or SV
American Eagle Solids = Lead High Velocity or LHV
CCI Mini Mag Solids = Plated High Velocity or PHV
CCI Stingers = Hyper Velocity or HypVel

-------CB------SSHP------SV-------LHV-----PHV----HypVel

28.6 652/53 968/16 1037/13 1206/16 1188/24 1660/50

Re: Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

little more on the topic:

Barrel Shortening test

if you were going with open sites, the longer the better for site picture. other wise (after an initial drop in FPS) the shorter barrel cuts down on weight and actually improves the "handling" or balance a bit more.

Re: Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

Most bullet lubes on modern rim-fire tends to run out much beyond 16" that dose not apply to the target fodder.

Re: Barrel Length 22in or 16.5in?

I have a CZ453 that I am thinking about having cut down to 16.5" and threaded for a suppressor. I will let ya'll know when it is complete.
