they should be but not always, I have some custom barrels with nothing on them and some milspec barrel with codes like CMP 556
go figure those out.

often barrels are marked... but blanks come marked at the chamber end, generally, and this sometimes get machined off...
if it's a factory gun from an average manufacturer, it's usually not hard to find out about the barrel, some customs or higher end factory guns are a little harder.
