Barrel measurement questions?

I have been checking these custom rifle maker sites and I have a question about the way they measure and advertise their barrels.

The reason for the question is that I see that GAP is advertising that their Crusader has a 23" barrel but that the barrel is a Bartlein 22" barrel from the front lug.

Can someone explain this to me so I know what to expect when I pull the trigger on one of their rifles. Does the barrel throat seat down in the action and that is what the extra inch is, I am confused...

So if a manufacturer advertises that their rifle has a 20" barrel on it, it is actually only 19" sticking out in front of the recoild lug?

Re: Barrel measurement questions?

The barrel measurement is the total length of the barrel itself. So if you were to remove it from the rifle, and measure from the tip of the muzzle/crown to the very last thread on the shank, that's what you'd get. Basically if you could put the whole metal bar in a giant caliper. That's how it's measured.

Re: Barrel measurement questions?

FYI,

http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5320-8/atf-p-5320-8-chapter-2.pdf

"The ATF procedure for measuring barrel length is to measure from the closed bolt (or breech-face) to
the furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device. Permanent methods of
attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver
soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over. Barrels are measured by inserting a dowel rod
into the barrel until the rod stops against the bolt or breech-face. The rod is then marked at the
furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device, withdrawn from the barrel, and
measured."

Re: Barrel measurement questions?

For the most part barrel length is measured from the end of the breech to the muzzle.

This is industry standard. Like I said though there is a but in there and for the most part that's the way it's done.

There are some guns that are spec. that they measure from the recoil lug etc....
