I went out today and fired 100 rounds. I was single loading them one after another. The first 50 were fine. After that, the shots just started slowly dropping down and down. I felt my barrel and I do have to say it was pretty hot. But I don't really feel it often enough to say that was the hottest it's ever been. I took it home and cleaned and it wasn't really that bad. I've definitely seen worse. I need some help cause I've never had this happen to me before.

Re: Barrel Overheating??

Are you shooting a .17HMR out of a fairly lightweight barrel? POI walking from heat is a characteristic of light barrels...if you are humping a rifle on a hunt and only plan on taking 1-3 shots then you never notice the issue.

Re: Barrel Overheating??

People seem to have nothing but good things about Wipe-Out. They advertise about copper a lot. Some people were even going to buy a new rifle, but then used this. Also no scrubbing the barrel. Anybody out there use this, or think it's a good way to go?

Re: Barrel Overheating??

You have to treat the 17HMR like a CF. Other than the method of ignition, it's a CF in performance and components. The bullet has a gliding metal jacket just like a CF, the velocity is ~2500fps just like a CF. As such, you should shoot/maintain it as if it was a CF.

If your fired 100rds as fast as you could load, chances are you heated that bore quite a bit.

Re: Barrel Overheating??

No, KG12 is the way to go. KG12 does in 15 min. what wipeout did overnight when you mixed it 50/50 with the accelerator (which isn't reality).

Re: Barrel Overheating??

SmallBore - on another note, your website says the 17hmr is the most powerful rimfire caliber out and there have been torso sized hits at 500 yards which is "half a mile".

You do know that a mile is 1760 yards right?
So, 500 is not a half a mile..... and I havent heard any stories of confirmed kills at 500 yards with a 17HMR.

And on the claim of 17HMR being the most powerful...... no.

Just saying.......

Re: Barrel Overheating??

1) I hate math
2) Cool. I've never even heard of those calibers. My bad.

Although I have seen guys actually shooting beer bottles at 400 yards. It was on a you tube video, but I can't seem to find it again. I have to correct my site. Thanks for the info!

Prior to Center Fire cartridges, the first self-contained cartridges were Rimfire and Pinfire ignition.
