Anybody know of a competent shop that will re-contour a chambered barrel? I will check with the manufacturer as well, but from other reviews it doesn't look like they will do it, which I can understand. They are in the business to sell new barrels, not work on old ones. I probably wouldn't be interested in doing it either if I was them. I know some will recommend not doing this as there "could" be some issues with bore growing a bit. What I have is a medium palma Brux cut rifled barrel chambered in 7mm-08 ackley Improved, finished and threaded at 26.5". Would like to take it down to something like a 22-23" medium or heavy sporter. I want to do this for two reasons:
1. The barreled action is just sitting there in the safe, I've went back to 308 for higher volume shooting so I can buy off the shelf quality factory ammo. Getting ready to build a new 6.5 Creedmoor as well so I doubt I go back to using it anytime soon. My reloading time is limited these days. I'd rather be shooting than loading. If I could re purpose this into a medium weight sporter hunting rifle for less than the cost of a new barrel blank + chamber + brass, why not?
2. I have lots of already formed norma brass that I'd like to keep using. I like the chambering and think it would make a dandy mid range hunting rifle, but not at the expense of new barrel, chambering, and brass forming, etc.
I understand this requires a bit of set up and isn't an inexpensive process. Right now it shoots spectacularly, its possible that it might shoot like shit when it comes back . I live in a world of chances and take them every day. Most of the reviews that I've ready on the subject, from folks that have actually done this, seem to be pretty positive.
