Barrel shroud to avoid NFA

My .308 can came in today and I'm thinking I'll put a .300 whisper barrel on my savage. From what I've read over at Quarterbore 12" seems to be the optimal bbl length for that caliber(pushing 240gr SMKs subsonic).

After seeing the Tacsol SB-X 10/22 bbl I got the idea of just getting a 12" barrel and having my smith weld a real clean, light weight shroud to it. The rifle would only be shot suppressed and the can would fit down into the shroud. This would reduce the over all length and avoid having to do more NFA paper work.

Anyone have any ideas or experience about this? The barrel setup would look like this only bigger:

it's the same as doing a 14.5" ar with a pinned flash hider. You'll be fine as long is you're @ least 16" and cannot just get a wrench and remove the can making it a sbr.

Re: Barrel shroud to avoid NFA

Oh I know. It would be a permanently attached shroud. It would be like 8-10in barrel or so and a 8in shroud. This would GREATLY reduce overall length. The biggest challenge I'm thinking will be creating a shroud that doesn't look like shit.

You could also tack weld a muzzle mount can as prescribed by the feds and make it permanently attached. The Savage bbl. is easy to pop in and out...no problem with making an SBS that way if your 'smith is not an SOT Mfg. We have done that with some 300 whisper bbls. cut to 12" to finish with an OAL length of 16.1" (.5 to .6 of thread). This gets you away from having to go with 2 stamps. Some states who are not SBR friendly leave this as your option for getting a short rifle.

Re: Barrel shroud to avoid NFA

I'm gonna use the can on 4 other rifles so welding it to the rifle won't be an option. My smith is a SOT so I won't have to worry about that.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about building the shroud. What material, what design, etc.. My dealer/smith is very talented and is one of the few guys in my area that does great welding with titanium. That might be my best option.

Another issue is barrel length. I'd like to go as short as possible but want optimal function. I don't think it will be too big of an issue as subsonic speeds are whats desired. The can is 8.5" so I'm thinking maybe a 8" barrel.
