Gunsmithing Barrel tenion threading

So I bought a PVA barrel and their aftermarket barrel nut and wrench. I put the barrel into the rifle and head spaced it with go/no-go gauges and thought I was good to go.

I went to put the original handguard back on and realized that the nut that threads onto the barrel nut wasn’t threading down far enough to keep the Handguard from moving around.

It felt like it would only thread down A few turns and not near enough to keep the collar that the Handguard got attached to from moving around.

Thinking I had the barrel nut turned the wrong way I went to disassemble it and the supplied wrench slipped off the barrel nut and wouldn’t turn the barrel nut. I was able to finally get the barrel nut off and it went about 5 turns before it got tight coming off the barrel threading.

Hindsight, I shouldn’t have forced it. Now the barrel threading won’t thread into the receiver.

I guess I’m asking now what my options are. Am I screwed or what?

Depending on the extent of the damage you could start with a triangle needle file and finish with the appropriate thread file to clean it up. Threads can definitely be chased in the lathe to clean them back up. I would probably see what the thread file could do before I chucked it in the lathe unless the threads were really in bad shape.
