Just picked another gun(6.5X47 Lapua). The barrel is threaded 5/8X24 with a barrel OD of 1.00" at the shoulder. The issue is the thread length is .500.". That's .500" from the muzzle to the shoulder. I'm wondering if the large amount of contact area on the shoulder will compensate for the short threads. My guess is the gun was ordered that way for a muzzle break?? It has a thread protector in place now......anyways I really don't want to jerk the barrel off to have it rethreaded longer.
Thanks for your time and input.

Most of the barrels I see threaded and those I do myself for customers are threaded .500" until they get to .75" dia or more. At that point they get threaded .550". As long as the shoulder is square and the threads are concentric with the bore you'll be fine with the setup you have. The shoulder is what keeps the can square, not the thread. I really prefer a 2 point mount myself but my favorite .338 lapua has a single point mount and it works quite well. I've not had any problems with the can wobbling or coming loose. Having a 1" diameter shoulder will help too.
