Gunsmithing Barrel threading for suppressor

Hi all, I just picked up my rifle from the smith. Had barrel threaded for a muzzle break QD suppressor. Just wanted your thoughts. The break doesn’t sit tight against the shoulder. Is thus a problem? Thunderbeast Ultra 7 with 5/8-24 muzzle break.

TBAC does not include crush washers. They include peel washers. And yes, it's possible once you use them and time the brake, you won't have a gap. But yeah, a gap is a problem. Make sure you don't have it after timing...

Is something on the brake bottoming out on the barrel shoulder? Or has it reached the end of the threads?

Did you supply the brake to the smith for installation?

Looks like a crush washer - which it shouldn't be. Take if off and see, it's gotta come off anyway and go back on w/ shims or peel washer. If your smith used a crush washer, I'd be suspect of the quality of the threading job.

Take it off. Ifs a crush washer which sure looks like it is take it back and have him time it without shims. It’s not that hard.
Or take it back and ask him.

Agreed, looks like the cheesy way out with a crush washer.
"Technically", not incorrect- but for a smith to use one on a barrel that he's threading is bullshit.
Take the extra ten minutes to face the shoulder so that it clocks correctly instead.

I've got a box of them from customer supplied brakes that come with them and would never use them.
They're really for factory threaded barrels/owner installed brakes.

I gave the brake and had him thread and install. I have not removed the break to see what’s going on. I’ll probably start with a phone call tomorrow.

This may have been a really short barrel he couldn't get through the head stock without removing the barrel so he threaded between centers with a crown saver. In that case you can still pull it and put it back in the lather or just remove material from the back of the brake. Either way if it's on there tight and the threads are good it will work fine, it's just a cosmetic thing. But if you want it timed you should ask the guy to fix it.

It’s a 26” barrel, definitely able to fit through the head stock. I guess I’ll at least go baby and get the supplied peel washer from him and install it myself.

I'd take it back and tell him to do it right. You paid for him to do it the right way.

Having the brake in hand the builder should have timed the barrel so the brake would torque without shims.

I would be unhappy with that job. When I get a new barrel I install it (temporarily) to headspace and mark TDC (top dead center) on the barrel and then I give the new barrel and muzzle brake to my gunsmith for him to thread the barrel and clock the brake. And this is the result.

That is not the peel washer that TBAC provides. I would be suspect of the threading and installation. Ask the gunsmith and see if what he says makes sense.
