Is it appropriate to thread a barrel by chucking The chamber end in a lathe with the
muzzle/crown in a centre? A lot of the photos and write ups I see here use a rod in the barrel to indicate center and chuck it close to the muzzle end and/or utilize a spider.

Re: Barrel Threading Method

Yes, you can do it as described. We do it all the time, but mainly on stuff like factory 10/22 barrels. On action threads or muzzles for c2/3 use we chuck in the 4 jaw and indicate off the bore. It depends on your end use, equipment, and abilities.

Re: Barrel Threading Method

i was at my machinests today watching him do it and learning what i could. the only advise i can give is to make sure you indicate on the bore not the outside of the barrel. my barrel had 6 thou runout

Thanks for the replies. Just comparing after seeing a lot of smiths photos here on how they did it compared to one I watched in person with the centre in the crown/muzzle.
