I'm new to the forum, I did a search, and couldn't find a topic that covered what I am asking.

A friend of mine has a load that he has worked up using his Savage 12V which has a 1:10" twist, and using Vihtavuori with a 178 gr. Hornady AMAX. Theoretically, will my 1:12" twist Remington 700 produce similar results using the same load data?

I realize that this is a theoretical question, but is there anything that would prevent my 1:12" twist barrel from performing close to that of a 1:10" twist barrel?

Re: Barrel Twist Rate and Bullet Question

Welcome

Before the rebarreling my savage had a 12 twist that shot 175 smks very well. It also shot 168 smks very very well. I never ran any amax through it though. Your rifle should shoot the 178s just fine. There are a lot of variables that affect what your barrel will like. Again, I doubt that you will be keyholing them b/c of the twist. The only way to be sure they will run to your expectations is to try it at distance and see. If it wont shoot the 178s to your liking, just jump right on the 155s.

FWIW I use a 1/11.25 twist now and have great results with 175 smk, 175 vld, and 178 amax all at a bit over 2600 fps.

You will need different load data to get the best performance since every barrel will have different harmonics etc. BUT you will probably be in the ballpark of common loads. Just take some tuning time. That is the fun part anyway.
You are going to want to work up your own recipe anyway, so I wouldnt worry about his load data really.
