Gunsmithing barrel vibration-tuning device

Re: barrel vibration-tuning device

I found mine would shoot bugholes one day, and the next, when environmentals altered even a little, they went out of tune.

They hone the barrel's harmonics to a very fine edge of accuracy, but that fine edge is also very 'brittle'.

In the end, I decided that I was shooting far too many 'retuning' rounds; and that unless barrel life was not an issue, the tuner was a counterproductive factor.

Yes they are.

Smallbore is my back yard. I've worked on a lot of them ranging from minipalma, silhouette, International 3P, and BR.

Tuners are great so long as your poop is in one group and you don't change a thing.

Things that'll bite you:

Change in lots of ammo
Change type of ammo
Change guard screw torque
Change barrels
Change stocks
Change bedding
Forget to check the tuner to ensure its at the same setting

One thing interesting about them is they tend to "cycle." The ones I made/installed at the Anschutz shop tended to repeat about every 8 ticks on the dial. Start at 0 and end up at 8 and the groups were pretty similar with a wide range of change in between.

A centerfire's greatest advantage from this chair is your doing the same thing by tuning the load. Only now you don't have a Freightliner transmission knob on the end of your barrel.

Ahh okay, nice to know. Sorry for the slow responce, I couldn't find this thread after posting in it lol

So all in all, unless you're willing to play with it constantly to get the right tune every time, or you can keep EVERYTHING constant, then the general census is to stay away from them?
