Gunsmithing barrel vise

Re: barrel vise

Barrel vise preferences are like women. Quite a few look good, and can get the job done; it just depends on whether you like blonds, brunettes, redheads etc...

It's a vice...

I have a wheeler barrel vise. Meh, it works most of the time. There's always those actions though, that some gorilla torqued the barrel on with an 18 foot pry bar, that are going to test a person's patience and no vise is going to be able to contend with without a lot of prep and help of other tools...

Re: barrel vise

I use the Wheeler vise, but with custom aluminum clamp blocks instead of the crappy wood bushings that ship with it:

Re: barrel vise

I can't remember who made this but it is stout and has never failed. I bought it from Brownells many moons ago.

For barrels that I have installed, I just made some nylon inserts and use with rosin. For tough barrels with hard to grab sporter contours, I pour lead inserts and make sure I have plenty of high pressure lube on the bolt threads.

I used to have the action wrench made by the same company but evidently 10lbs of steel has evaporated.
