I was wondering, generally speaking, does anyone know what saves more weight, getting a lighter contour or fluting the barrel? I'm specifically talking about .300WM barrels. I realize it depends on various factors and I guess I could always do both but when I'm trying to weigh (no pun intended) the trade-offs I just want an general idea of the effects of each. I did a search but couldn't come up with any threads on this topic. Thanks for the info.

Re: Barrels: Fluting and Contours

i've always wanted to see a fluting weight reduction chart on different barrel contours. one with all kinds of fluting, from shallow straight flutes to deep spiral flutes.

Re: Barrels: Fluting and Contours

I'd opt for a fluted barrel in a heavier contour. I have a Rem Varmint contour 27" blank with a 2.75" long shank and a M24 contour 27" blank that is fluted with a 4" long shank. The M24 is a much heavier contour and would be alot more rigid than the Rem Var but is only 5 ounces heavier.

D'oh. Thanks. I should have looked more carefully.
