As much as I hate these types of questions, this is a bit different than the ole "WHICH IS BETTER" types of thread, (but barely)

I've got a couple rifles in the pipe line and I'm trying to decide which barrel to use for this first build. The first rifle that's going to see work will be a 7mm Rem Mag.

I've got a Shilen Select Match #8 Heavy Varmint 8 twist

and a Rock Creek M24 8.5 twist both 7mm barrels.

The weight of each is of no concern, so other than that, the quality from the manufacturer and twist rate are the only differences.

It's going to hang a TBAC 30BA, so suppressor weight is probably not going to cause much accuracy difference regarding barrel flex due to the minor difference in contour.

Which of the two, would you use and why.

Rock Creek because I'm a cut-rifled kind of guy. Shilen's are nice barrels but IMHO they are not on par with any of the major cut-rifled barrels like Rock Creek,Bartlein, or Kriegers. With that being said, either one you choose will probably work for your needs, just make sure it's properly chambered/crowned.

    Re: barrels for two builds

I've shot both, button and cut rifled barrels, as a matter of fact I "had" a shilen SM w/8twst on my 260 that would easily shoot under .5moa with handloads, once I shot the throat out and was no longer able to load mag length, I pulled the barrel and replaced it with a 22" brux w/ 8.5 twst, first rounds fired were under .5 moa, both barrels were very heavy contour, tapering from 1.25" down to 1" @ the muzzle... some may ask about pulling the shilen barrel and replacing it with a brux... don't worry, we are rechambering the shilen to 6.5X284 and should be able to get another 1K rounds out of her... I broke in both of these barrels with my break in procedure the exact same way, and the brux fouled less between shots.

+1 for the Rock. Cut rifling is the way to go. IMHO.

Either would work. Just my personal preference.

    Re: barrels for two builds

Ive shot them both, couldn't shoot to the mechanical accuracy of the gun so its a toss up. I wouldn't feel hindered by either one. I prefer a cut rifled barrel, but in the end if they were both finished and chambered could you tell which was which?

    Re: barrels for two builds

We'll, they're both gonna get used...no question, but the first one is going to be a Magnum and the other is probably going to be a SAUM.
I realize not a whole lot of difference...but it will still be nice to have one of each.
