Gunsmithing Barrels

I'm posting this because I have read that there are certain companys are advertising barrels they manurfacturing are lined with Stelite? I'm an old machinest and remember using Stelite as a material for making cutting tools. That said I was wondering if someone could add to this. It seems alittle over kill for your standard rifle barrels to be lined with a material this hard and has problems with breakings. Could the reason this process is done is for cooling on heavey usage/

For something with good barrel life like a 308 or 30 BR or 6x45 etc then I'm apt to think it's a waste.

If it helps improve barrel life for something like a 6.5-284 or 300 RUM or 6.5-06 then it might be worth it. All of those 3 eat barrels in 1500 rounds or (far) less.

That being said, I have no idea if it really works or if it's snake oil.

A lot of machine gun barrels have had Stellite liners in the chamber and part of the bore.I use a lot of hard chrome lined Browning machine gun barrels on bolt guns.If the barrel is machined properly prior to chroming or Stellite lining the hard surface will preserve the barrels accuracy.In my experience it makes cleaning very easy also.

the liners are used in barrels which will see some heavy belt fed long long string fire. Accuracy isn't the proponent behind stellite lining, merely a slight inhibitor to the massive heat and erosion factors caused by sending a lot of lead for a long period...

Thanks guys, So this process isn't something I would fine In a
production barrel such as a bolt rifle or AR10 chambered for .243?

no, it would be very cost prohibitive to do something like that..
