Okay, I have a major itch for what you see pictured in the image below. My only question is, will this accept ANY type of .338 ammunition, such as the Federal Fusion 200gr, or must it be fed Lapua ammo only?

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

You cannot just feed it any .338 ammo. There are different ammo that have the same diameter, hence the .338 caliber designation, such as the .338 RUM and .338 win mag.

You must feed it .338 Lapua only.

It's as comparable as the 7.62X51 NATO is to the 7.62X39 or 7.62X54R.

Same diameter, totally different ammo.

Here's some .338 Lapua loaded by SW ammo

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

I think your question is a little vague, however i think I get what you mean. I own a 98B and it will accept any variety of .338 Lapua Magnum ammunition. Ive shot Hornady Match, Black Hills, Factory Laupa, and hand loads... All work as long as they are .338 Lapua Magnum caliber.

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

Holy shit...LOL...the ammo is even expensive from SouthWest Ammo. Looks like I'll only be able to dream about having one of these because I'm not prepared to pay $85/box for 20rds.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Yeah, by at least $50/box. LoL

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

I've got the bug bad for one of these too. Plan on reloading for it, if it becomes a reality. My local dealer has the Serbian Prvi Partizan 250 gr round in .338 LM for about $55.00 per box of 20. I realize this is far from the best ammo for the Barrett, but I'd be interested to see how it would do. I've got some serious saving/prioritizing/listing/selling to do before I can even think seriously about it. Dang lack of funds!

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

If you figure 100 rds Lapua brass at $295 using Lapua Scenars bullets at $700 per 1000 and able to reload brass 10 times. Comes out to about $1.50 per round of some great ammo through the 98b. Great weapon to shoot and worth saving for. I sold toys and scraped cash together, worth every penny to me.

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

That's why I recommend .300WM instead of .338LM for most folks. Unless you plan to take it past 1400 yards, then .300WM is much more economical, if that's a key factor in your decision.

Re: Barrett 98B .338 - Ammo Question

Dogtown you are so right. I wish Barrett made this rifle in a 300 W.M. I know the MRAD will have a 300 WM barrel switch available, but it sounds like you will already have to own the 338 version, which is about $1800. higher than the 98B. I keep waffling back and forth, knowing that I'd be getting more use and better economics from the 300. But, having said all that, a 338 LM with a 10 round box mag is just SO tempting! Thanks, CKruse
