Suppressors barrier penetration?

Re: barrier penetration?

Me thinks some specificity in your posting is needed. Otherwise all you'll get, & rightfully so, are one word answers.

Yes, or No

And this isn't exactly what one would call a new topic. There's LOADS of info out there, & likely a good bit on here. Such is why there's a search function on the Hide. And google etc. for the rest of the e-world.

Re: barrier penetration?

So, you the one shooting at someone behind the door, or are you the one being shot at?

Despite the strange nature of the question, why the hell would anyone want to turn this question loose on the internet? I can't wait to see all of the "I've seen _X_ penetrate/not penetrate (random medium), so I'd never/only carry _Y_." Grab your bullshit shovel.

Jason, somehow I KNEW that it'd be wise for me to put down the beverage prior to clicking on that link. And as to said "link" & it's "message"... Sweet! A task well done.

Re: barrier penetration?

I'm also curious about the necessity of the requested information. No offense here, just wondering from an opsec standpoint, why you want to know what will penetrate certain barriers?

Re: barrier penetration?

Ahh.. Box of truth, long time fav, I really enjoy there back yard style of testing.

Im looking for more resources like this, not necessarily lab test or anything, but box of truth style against more metal.

Re: barrier penetration?

If you are asking about good rounds to run in your pistol in a self defense situation, the general consensus is to get a good modern bonded hollowpoint that functions in your gun and be done. They all perform pretty similar in barrier penetration testing. Some are more consistent than others though. If it were me, I'd just get a box of each in whatever caliber your shooting and see what runs the best in your gun. Gold Dots, Fed HST & Tactical Bonded, Win Ranger T & bonded, Golden Saber bonded, Corbon DPX, and Hornady TAP red box are all good choices. For the money, I like the gold dots.

Now, that being said, if you are asking where the best place to hit the specific barrier for the handgun round to go through it, then thats a horse of a different color. Nobody in their right mind is going to tell you that unless you have a valid reason to know and proper creds because they don't know who you are or how you intend to use the information. If you do have the need to know and the proper creds, you need to contact Buford Boone. He is the SAC at the FBI's Ballistic Research Facility. Buford can set you straight on anything ammo related you need to know, among other things. Hopefully, this will get you started in the right direction.

Given that you've referenced several "service cartridges," you overlooked the one whose penetrative ability is unmatched against a variety of intermediate barriers, like auto glass, metal, wood of varying densities, etc. : the 10mm AUTO. Even the down-loaded "FBI-Lite" 10mm load (180gn @ about 980fps) beat out the .45 and 9mm in its penetration tests.

If you do a Google for, say, "10mm ammo" and "penetration tests," you should be able to find lots of posts, links and YouTube stuff where 10mm users have continued this sort of testing, shooting the round into a variety of items like engine blocks, discarded refrigerators, etc.

In its high-performance manifestations (i.e., original Norma-levels, Double Tap, Buffalo Bore), the 10mm really has no equal in the autoloader category - which means in autoloaders of reasonable size and weight, suitable for concealed carry or duty use. Not the oversized, pants-drooping behemoths, like Desert Eagles, Wildeys or AutoMags.

Re: barrier penetration?

I was more worried about my current loads not doing the job of possibly needing to penetrate some common barriers. Google has helped me find out my 9mm load can probably change, but my 45 load is ok.

I never was asking "what is the best round to shoot through the door of a crown vic or dodge charger" but I can understand the lack of just handing out that info.
