Has anyone had Bartlein Barrel's true an action for them. I am seriously considering sending them an action for a complete overhaul and wanted any pros/cons experienced.

I have talked to Frank at Bartlein several times and have to say he has been more than helpful and has answered all my questions swiftly. They are obviously great barrel makers and was surprised with their workload that they spent as much time on the phone/email with me as they have (sorry to slow their work for those of you waiting on barrels).

Thanks in advance for any help,
Nathan

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

I build precision rifles, and use Bartlin barrels on some of my builds. The service has been very good and Frank was very helpful. I did not know they also trued actions, but if their work on actions is like their barrel building, you will get great results. Remember that if you're building a custom rifle with accuracy in mind you should let one person do all the work. This will insure that if there is a problem you will know who to adress. If you need any more info on the subject, contact me at suarez tactical rifles. I do this type workwith very good results, and don't charge anything for advice.

STR finish filling out your profile and since you are new here, I'll save you some heartache. There are members here that are gunsmiths and they pay money (to the site) to offer their services. You are basically poaching by pushing your business and trying to drum up work from members, advice is another thing.

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

I also did not realize Bartlein trued actions until recently. The following was their blueprinting procedure for what I was requesting:

"In one set up:
Recutting the receiver threads
Recutting the receiver lugs
Truing up the receiver face
Oversized recoil lug and double pinned to the receiver (in the future when put a new barrel on the action the lug will time up right where it was before and this won't effect the bedding.)

In one set up:
True the bolt face
Recut the bolt lugs
Bush the firing pin hole
Turn down the firing pin tip
Single sleeve the backside of the bolt by the rear receiver bridge (this will take any slop/clearance out of the bolt when it is cammed close in the receiver. It helps to keep the bolt in alignment with the bore of the barrel.)

This is the most you can do to an action for truing. You could double sleeve the bolt (front end also) but I would only recommend this for a hardcore bench gun as the bolt will be a tighter/snugger fit and I don't recommend this for a tactical type gun as you want speed and reliability.

We can do the truing and get it done before the barrel is done."

The last sentence was in relation to a barrel I recently ordered. As far as fixing any problems, I'm a remington 700 armorer and have rebarrelled a couple of rifles on my own. However, a completely trued action as described is beyond my capabilities at this time. Thanks for the advise on sticking with one smith per gun though, it does make sense.

exactly , what does that service run price wise

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

Bartline did a Sako 220 swift to run the 75 a maxes for Me
The Rifle is absolutely perfect. It is a BR quality varmint rifle.

Have no fear of sending work there way but expect longer than published turnarounds.

We called to order a barrel and ended up sending them a rifle.

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

Jon, what type of turn around time did you have? I did the same, after I ordered the barrel I started thinking about sending the action.

Axeman, I have actually looked at LA Precision and he was at the top of the list. His prices are not bad and his work looks good. His site explains his process pretty thorough. He and KMW were the two I was considering a complete built from for next year.

Thanks for the replies.

This is an awesome reccomendation, by one hell of a gunsmith. And a good guy to listen to.

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

Guys, We don't push fitting/gunsmithing work but we do offer it though. I don't want anyone to take this in the wrong way but for us it is like someone buying oil, candy, soda etc....at a gas station. It's secondary for us. With us being the gas station per say the main thing we sell is the gas (barrels).

We try and focus on the barrel making but doing gunsmith work goes along with it.

We try and take the time to answer peoples questions on the phone and email the best we can in a timely manner the best we can. Sorry if there are times when we cannot (please be patient as we get about 20-30 emails a day at times and the phone seems to ring non stop even on the weekends with phone calls even coming in at 6:30 to 9:00 at night). Every once in a while someone will call and want to ask a bunch of questions especially first time customers or someone who is putting together they're first custom rifle and they apologize for taking so much time on the phone etc....Don't apologize! All I say to them is you got me on the phone and it's your quarter and you made an effort to call so ask the questions you need to ask. Sometimes I'm on the phone for 5 min. and sometimes it is for an hour.

I remember when I started building my first custom rifles and also started shooting rifle matches and reloading. I had no one to ask questions to or teach me anything or give me good advice. This will always stay with me and I will never forget it.

Weather you are a first time customer or having your first rifle built or you are a seasoned veteran at it or have been shooting matches for 30 years I try and give each person the time they need when they call and answer they're questions the best I can. Sorry if at times we cannot get to someone in a timely manner.

As much as I like to work on and build my own guns I myself don't always have the time. Between work here and family at home it is tough. Which by the way leads me to say I'm having GAP build me my next rifle. I've had guns built by places like Compass Lake Engineering and some other smiths do work for me as well over the years.

If you have a smith that does work for you and builds you an excellent stick etc.....keep using them as well. Sometimes there is a guy who wants a barrel from us and wants us to do the smithing work as well and wants one stop shopping per say. Will do it and do it the best we can.

Thanks to all!

Moon are you going to put my next stick together!? No pressure man! Who ever does it at GAP it will be fine! See you at Shot Show in a couple of weeks!

Later, Frank

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

Thanks to all of you for the welcome (this is my first post). And thanks again to Frank for the time. I am packaging my action now to send.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the range one day.

Re: Bartlein blueprint question?

This responce may be a bit late. You are right in that I am new and don't know how to use the web site correctly. First forgive me for my mistake. I have already contacted Frank and am in the process to advertise here. I will refrain from doing anything that would "drum up business" for my self. When you don't really know someone, don't assume their actions had ill intentions. I would never do anything that would hurt anyone, take anything that does not belong to me, and would help anyone that needs it if they want it. Again sorry if you were hurt by what I unknownly did, no harm intended. Regards Ozzie Suarez
