I have a Winchester M70 with an unknown set of bases. Front is a dovetail style and rear is the windage screw style. They're not Leupolds. I'd like to replace them with Leupold Dual Dovetail bases but the screws won't come out. I assume they're locktighted in. I've tried a torch and heated them up but I still keep rounding off my allen wrenches.

What should I do?

Re: base screws stuck on M70

Drill head of screw off and remove base, heat with a hairdryer to loosen lock-tite...then use vise grips to unscrew headless screw with the thread pressure released due to the screw head being drilled/removed... Prolly will come right out... Done correctly it shouldnt damage the mount at all just replace the screw and you should be good to go!

Manufacturer? I dunno. Should be available at any hardware store. Couple different types available, coarse reverse thread and tapered 4 flats.

I have both types, but used the 4 flat style yesterday (same screw head size). I used an 1/8" (standard right twist) bit to drill down into the screw head, lined up the 4 flat Eazy Out, gave it a couple of solid taps with a hammer to seat it, and then grabbed it with a set a pliers and spun it out.

You also may want to try a left handed drill bit.

As an escalation of effort - LH twist bit, Eazy Out, drill out and re-tap.

Good luck

Re: base screws stuck on M70

I put a torch on it and that didn't loosen it, doubt a hairdryer will do any better.

The bases look to be a Redfield or Weaver. The rear is pretty thick, maybe a good 1/2". There shouldn't be any threads in the bases right? So if I get the screw head off the bases should come straight up right?
