I am a recreational shooter, this is not a duty or competition rifle. Most shots from a bench. Rem 700 in .223 if it matters. Looking to re-stock, currently the rifle is fitted with a Choate "ultimate sniper" stock. While it is a improvement over the plastic OE stock I really don't like it. So I've been looking around and have narrowed it down to three choices. I would like your input.

1. New Choate tactical stock
2. Bell & Carlson Medalist #2956-02 (I'm leaning toward this one)
3. A used HS Precision PSS stock

Thanks

I like the medalist tactical mainly for the vertical grip.

The HS precision is a very solid stock and if I was building a hunting rifle I would be using a used HS

I have never handled the new choate stock but the ultimate sniper stock you speak of is as about as "ultimate" as a chrome plated ninja weapon holstered through the belt loop of napolean dynamite's corduroys.

not a fan of the choate but my hs precisions have always worked well. no real experience with the medalist. looks nice though

The first decision you will have to make is whether you want the vertical grip or not. If you do, you're down to the first two. Between the first two, there are differences. The B&C will be better from the bench with it's flat fore end and smooth rear for riding bags. The Choate will be better from the prone with the butt hook. They both have aluminum bedding systems so there should be little to no accuracy differences between them. If you don't want the vertical grip, the HS stock is the obvious choice. You are leaning toward the correct stock for your application.

All this is very opinionated so the following apply: YMMV, my 2 cents, ect...

Thanks for the replies!

rwest: I completely understand what you are saying, thus my use of quotation marks around their name for it.

I like the vertical grip of my current choate. I guess the B&C or choate would be the one to get? Unless the HS is vastly superior to the other two....

Suggest forgetting about the choate, forever, Amen.

Get the B&C or the HS.

And use the piss out of it.

I sent you a message. If it is the stock in your sig pic I am interested but I am looking to buy soon. How long until your new one arrives?

Thanks

Re: Battle of the $200 stocks Choate vs B&C vs Used HS

Unlike most of the other shooters, I have a Choate Tactical that I really like. I fitted it with a Kyrsten Adjustable cheek piece. I got them when they were still 170 bucks but they've since jumped to 250.

While I've never owned a B&C medalist, my shooting partner does and I like it as well.

I've never liked the HS as I always thought it felt slick and lacked grip.

Now that being said, before I get flamed for liking my Choate, I firmly believe the Choate Ultimate Sniper is junk. I had one on an old 700 in 22-250. All things equal, the current World F T/R Class Champion shoots one.... Not a joke.

Walsh and I have come to a agreement on the purchase of his stock.

I am glad I posed this question on here. I really hadn't thought of the vertical grip aspect that was pointed out. I think I would have been unsatisfied with the HS I almost purchased.

Thanks Hide!

You will be happy with the B&C it is the best stock out there in that price range in my opinion. (which is worth very little to anyone but me)
