Do you guys this this will take a .308 round at 500-800 yards?

I found this laying around at work. Its a step off one of our work trucks. I just couldn't pass it up it stands on its own perfectly and was just saying "shoot me" I'm thinking a 308 will go right through it. But my buddy thinks it might hold up. Dent like a mother but will take it as long as its past 500.

Also will it make a defined thud or ding from a hit?

17" x 13"
About 1/4 inch thick.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

Yea that's what I was thinking. You think it would make a solid thud or a ping sound? Cause where we shoot there is a hill covered in rocks and if they make the same sounds it probably wouldn't do any good.

That's why this piece was so perfect. It has too holes in the stands for rods and is angled for the ricochets will go down and will help with the impacts.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

Personally, I think a 308 is gonna go through that like butter. Probably a thud sound. As dontstrokeme said, grab a $4 can of Walmart brand white spraypaint, and it will work great. And that $4 can will make it a reusable target in about 2 seconds at the range.

Dam! Yea But at 700 yards with our crap binos I doubt we will be able to see it. That's the thing.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

We could my cousin is actually in a welding shop and he was planning on making us a plate out of his shops ar500 they have. But we figured if this works why spend that extra money. If we bought another steel plate I figure we might as well just bump up to the ar500 steel.

Do you use ar500 steel or just plain steel.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

I too am of the opinion that it might go straight through. I originally thought a big thick chunk of aircraft grade aluminum would stop a 300 Weatherby shell at 500 yards. Heck it hardly slowed the bullet down

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

Turn over and shoot the smooth side if you are worried.
If that is from a construction site (Truck @ Work),talk with maintainance, get worn cutting edges or loader teeth. You wont dent these at any distance with a 308, and after the service life they throw them away.

Aluminum is like butter compared to steel, even the aircraft grade. The moduli of steel is about 3 times greater than that of aluminum.

I don't think your going to have a problem with a 1/4" plate out past 500 with a 308. But like outsydlookinin said, that diamond plating pattern would worry me for ricochets if anything was off to the sides of where I was shooting.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

I'm not worried about ricochets at all. I'm shooting in the middle of no where with a mountain behind the target. We can see for miles if any ones around so that's not a worry or at that distance a returned round.

I'm smart enough to know to use paper or anything that would bounce back under 300 yards. The reason why people shoot at steel below that 500 yards still surprises me.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

AR 500 is the way to go. The 308 should pass right through that 1/4' diamond plate. Paint it white, (keep the paint handy) and shoot it 'til you get too many holes in it. Then spend the $$ on the proper steel. Use the AR 500 hanging on a chain and it will make nice sounds when you hit it.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

weld some ar500 to that and your set. just weld from behind thru the dplate

if your going to walmart for paint, and if your going to just paint a target that your going to shoot, for gosh sakes, dont buy $4 cans of spray paint. get 4 of the $0.97 cans

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

Hopefully next weekend were planning a trip. Either way its something to shoot at. I just wanted to see all of your takes on thinking if Ill have some scrap to take back home or a new usable target to same me some $$.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

I think it'll be fine. I use a mild steel target that is 1/2" thick, and it's barely getting scratched at 400 yards. If you're thinking that you're not going to use within 500 yards, i'm sure it'll be just fine. I'm with the others that it's likely to make a thud rather than a ring.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

.308 FMJ will pop right through that thin stuff with little acoustic feedback but you will be able to see your hits if you paint it white. An additional layer of 1/2" T1 plate will give you a good long-lasting target.

Re: Beacause I'm cheap.

At 500 yards, the bullets will be descending some instead of traveling horizontally. For what that is worth. If they are lead or lead core instead of solids, I wouldn't expect them to bounce back. Of course, one which hits the edge or the support might do something else.

Also interested in the report.
