Guys, I have bedded a bunch of Rem 700's with good results by following the Wnroscoe thread on here. I am wanting to bed a Savage rifle I have now and am running into a little problem. I have taken the trigger and magazine off the rifle, and dremeled the stock out so that the action is not riding high in any one place. I put tape on the barrel to level the action in the mag well and float the barrel. However, the tang of the rifle is still setting excessively high, about .150. I can torque the action screws and the tang will come down, and the barrel will float to the lug without the tape. However, I've always heard that the screws should get tight quickly and not gradually. Should I tighten the screws down when I bed to get the tang down but not so much as to not be floated or just bed it like I always do with the tape around the barrel and no torque with the tange setting high?

Just out of curiosity, what stock is this? The only Savage stock that I've seen that raises the tang that high is a Choate. Im assuming the stock doesn't have an aluminum block or pillars since you mentioned you dremeled it out for the action to sit lower?

bolt the pillars down tight as per the sticky at top of this section after taping barrel to dry fit- with at least .100 clearance under tang

for best results- the tang should be free floated on all savages stevens
just bed from-recoil lug to rear pillar
& you probably already know- the top 1/4' of the rear of rear pillar has to be tapered for sear clearance
